Dropbox Not working after restart: Reconnecting to the internet. This may take a moment.
I have been experiencing a very frustrating issue with Dropbox the past few days.
Issue: After restarting my Mac Studio (MacOS 13.6.5), Dropbox always gets stuck with the message:
Reconnecting to the internet. This may take a moment.
- No VPN
- No Firewall
- Home Network
- Fully updated Dropbox
The thing that is baffling is that :
- If you Quit and restart Dropbox it works immediately but if you restart the computer the issue appears again
- If you wait for a long time Dropbox eventually connects and syncs. But it takes a long time
- On the same computer, about a week ago, Dropbox was syncing instantly after reboot.
I have tried already reinstalling and deleting the cache folder.
Is this a known issue that's going on at the moment>
Many thanks
Hi everyone,
Just a quick update: we're rolling out a fix today that should resolve this issue. It's in Stable Build 197.4.7629.
As a reminder: the current workaround is to quit/close the Dropbox application and relaunch it.
Thank you!

Same problem here, happening on all of my machines (laptop, home desktop, office desktop). All Macs but otherwise totally different versions of OS, network configurations, etc. It's incredibly frustrating but is also starting to cause problems, because it's impossible to tell whether I'm working on the most recent version of a file. Whatever update caused this, please fix t, Dropbox!

Dropbox stopped connecting on login.
I've a new Mac Book Air with Mac OS 14.4.1 and latest version Dropbox desktop app (195.4.4995) with File Provider (but the same problem was already happening before switching to File Provider).
I don't have any security apps that might be blocking the connection, like antivirus, VPN etc.
Every time I have to quit app and restart it and that's how it works.
Important: even with the desktop app closed or connecting, files are synced regularly (maybe is the new File Provider for Mac system).
Thank you

Hey lucadc, thanks for reaching out to us.
Does the issue in this thread seem like the issue you're currently facing or is it something different?
Keep me posted.

Thank you, it's exactly the issue.
I have to wait a solution, as I read there.

Same issue here after restarting my M1 MacBook Pro, and right on deadline too as I was posting files when I had to restart for another app. I nearly had a heart attack when it said it wasn't connecting! Quit and restarting the app worked as suggested, but this is a hack not a solution Dropbox. Get it fixed pronto!

Same issues started today for me too on my Windows 11 PC.
I have unistalled and reinstalled it. Rebooted (many times) and also tried closing it after bootup and restarting it by right clicking and choosing run as admin...
Still it just sit on "Starting"
The closest I got to having "something" appear like it was going to work is when I turned my VPN "ON" and then tried to start it up. It asked me to Log In (i.e. since I have uninstalled and reinstalled Dropbox it has not actually logged back in yet) ... but even after it opened the browser application where I am logged in, and tried to connect back to the desktop app - it did not complete that action.
Oddly that only pops up if I turn on my VPN. When it is off, there is no request to log into my account when I start the desktop app?? - DBJRHelpful | Level 5
I'm having the same problem.
Hardware: MacBook Air 2024 M3
DropBox Version: v195.4.4995
I have tried:
DropBox Advanced Reinstall
Disabling Firewall & VPN and related background activities.

As I said on my original message:
- No VPN
- No Firewall
- Home Network
- Fully updated Dropbox
This is clearly a bug that manifests itself after reboot when the Mac takes a second to connect to the wifi network. If Dropbox does not find a network straight away it stays in this limbo until you restart it.
This is a serious issue and since it's been reported by so many users should be worked on already.
The only reason users might not experience this is Macbook Pro users that never restart the laptop. The issue ONLY happens when you restart a computer (e.g. a Mac Studio).
- DBJRHelpful | Level 5Totally agree. Please submit a support ticket. Maybe if they get enough tickets they’ll do something….

I've also had this issue pop up recently (the last week or so). I know that I recently did a Windows update prior to this issue.
I'm on Windows 10.
Dropbox v195.4.4995
It happened twice today. Opened my laptop at Starbucks, and I got the "reconnecting" issue.
Got to work. Opened my laptop, connected to the wifi and got the same "reconnecting" issue.
I have to shut down and reopen dropbox for it to connect. It seems like it's tripping over manually joining wifi, based on what I'm experiencing.
It's really frustrating, as I use Dropbox to switch between computers and access files only to find out that dropbox isn't syncing because I don't see the updates.
After years of use and it going fine, this is fairly annoying. I'm concerned at some point that I won't notice, edit a file on different computers only to find that I lost information because it's not syncing.- NancyDropbox Staff

I reinstalled Dropbox and it is still having the same problem. The issue seems to be that when I manually connect to wifi, it doesn't recognize that I've connected and it gets stuck with the "reconnecting" message.
The only solution I've found is to quit dropbox and open it up again.
This is a very recent development as I've been using Dropbox Plus without a problem since 2017.

We need a DropBox community moderator to weigh in on this. Is this a known bug being worked on by the DB development team?

Same issue here with Macbook Air M2 currently on Sonoma 14.4... it's been like this for weeks now. Only works after restarting Dropbox app.
- DBJRHelpful | Level 5I’m experiencing the same problem. Using a new MacBook Air M3, all software updated. I’m a fifteen year DropBox user and this is not the normal behavior. I see a a of replies to this thread of people responding to this with the same problem. Wondering if DropBox might be able to escalate this to engineering???

exact same issue here.
dropbox desktop app: 195.3.4974 beta
Apple M3 Pro
MacOS: Sonoma 14.4
reinstall, unlink did not work.
Quit and restart Dropbox is the only workaround

Same problem here. Dropbox reports "trying to connect to internet" despite no issues with internet connection. Macbook Pro M3. Everything latest version of software. Have had Dropbox automatically start up with the OS for 10 years without problems. Now it creates sync problems since it is not running and I have started to loose file changes. Please roll back to previous app version or solve it quickly please!
