Dropbox app for Android causing high battery usage
Hi there, I’m Antonio, a member of the Dropbox Mobile team. We’ve discovered an incompatibility issue between Dropbox’s app and Android OS that led to higher-than-normal battery usage on Android phones.
We’ve fixed the issue, and the app should return to normal functionality after restarting it.
To restart the app:
- On your device, open the Settings app and select Application Manager
- Switch to the Running tab to view your active apps
- Tap the Dropbox app and select Stop
- Re-launch the Dropbox app from your home screen
If you’ve restarted the app and are still seeing higher-than-normal battery usage, please reply to this thread, and we’ll take a look.
- Hi Alan, the main release of v76 will be rolled out 100% on this Wed. v78 will follow 2 weeks after that.
We’re glad to hear about this. We’d recommend that if any users still experience battery issues to contact our team directly so we can investigate this matter on an individual basis.

Hi,
I'm seeing this problem as of late (I would say a week, maybe a bit less). Dropbox is using a huge amount of battery and it's causing a large "Keep awake" time (I attach some screenshots at the end). I tried installing the beta version and it's the same situation.
I think it's related to wifi somehow, as the problem seems to be less acute when not on wifi, but I cannot assure that (I cannot correlate the plot of battery drain with the wifi on/off).
Any ideas of what could be happening?
Kind regards,
Albert

The issue is still present in the 72.2.2 version of the Android Dropbox.
From the Wakelock logs, it seems that the MobileUpload job started by Dropbox is keeping the phone awake.*job*/com.dropbox.android/.camerauploads.CameraUploadsScanAndUploadJobService
The only viable solution for now, to make my phone usable, is to Greenify the Dropbox app, which kills the Dropbox app.
Can you please let the dev team know? Who was doing the QA before approving the version that caused this bug? And why was the codebase (at least the commit where this issue was introduced) not roll-ed back when this bug was noticed? This is a server bug that affects the usability of user's phone.- Alan R.4Helpful | Level 6
Just filed a ticket too - getting 10% battery drain just from Dropbox on newly factory reset phone (SGS7) using latest stable version from Play Store. Set to autoupload pics/vids over WiFi when on charge, hardly used all day yet still big battery drain. Really surprised this hasn't been fixed given how long it has been reported for.
- LaurensBENew member | Level 2Im having the same problem. Since last update dropbox consumes 8-10% battery and i can't seem to fix it... Greenify cant hibernate the app either, since it has "running processes" so it must have some kind of process in the background that is looping.
Im on Galaxy s8 - android 7.0
Im considering removing the app althogether, since it feels more then just 10% battery drain...
please fix this :D
UPDATE: temporary solution is rolling back to a previous version here:
https://www.androidapksfree.com/apk/dropbox-apk-latest-version-download/
- I went back to 66.2.2 and problems are gone
- you need to manually remove your current version before you can install the roll-back
- Don't forget to disable auto-update for dropbox in play store - megawhiteCollaborator | Level 8
Over the last couple of months on the Android phone app I have noticed excessive battery usage by the DropBox App even when there is no upload or download activity.
Can this be fixed asap?
- MarkSuper User IIWe need way more info here - like Android OS version and Dropbox version as a minimum.

Hi, sorry yes that would help:
Android 5.0
Dropbox 50.2.2
As I say no active uploading or downloading. The majority of time the phone is Wi-Fi connected, I cannot tell if the drain is happening while specifically Wi-Fi or mobile data connected.

Do you upload a lot of files to Dropbox from other devices? Do you have any folders syncing to your mobile? But again your system information (Mobile Phone Model, OS information and Dropbox information) is important for us to help you.

In addition the the info I just provided, phone is Galaxy Note 3.
I do have a number of folders, probably less than 100. A few thousand files probably.
Again it uses a lot of battery even when I make no changes to files or folders.
Can I upload a screenshot of power management? I can only seem to link to an image with the insert/edit image button.
Thanks.
- Wilfried K.Explorer | Level 4I got the same problem since last update. No uploads/downloads from app.
Samsung Galaxy S5mini (SM-G800F), Android 6.0.1, Dropbox Version 50.2.2 from 30.5.17
I have to deactivate it, because if it's activated, it drains my battery empty in just 8 hours. (Without any other activity)
- ischustakNew member | Level 2I am running Dropbox 66.2.2 on my HTC 10 phone running Android 7.0. Dropbox is killing my battery and preventing my phone from sleeping while the screen is off. I've tried clearing cache, clearing data, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but the problem persists. Can you help?
- EdDropbox StaffThanks for sharing this - I've passed it to our Android team

Thanks a lot!
I have an extra piece of information, don't know how to relay it to the team... It looks like usage goes on with time of the day, somehow. Don't know if this helps, but Samsung starts complaining about drain usually later in the afternoon.
- OulaExplorer | Level 3I'm also seeing an extensive battery drain with Dropbox 68.2.2 version (the previous version was the same) for Abdroid. My phone is Huawei Mate 9.
I've tried to restart and reinstall several times, but no difference. Even though there are no uploads ongoing, the Dropbox app consumes 15% of the battery. Mainly because it seems to keep the system awake even though there's nothing happening. - TinyTimExplorer | Level 3
Unfortunately I also see an extensive battery drain with Dropbox 68.2.2 version for Android. The Phone I'm using is a SamSung Galaxy S6 running Android 7 (Patchlevel August)
Did do the whole thing with rebooting, r-installing, etc to no avail, it's still consuming approx 14%.
- DarthyNew member | Level 2Same issue here, 5 hours of keep awake on 68.2.2 and didn't even use it today.
- AxelderhundNew member | Level 2I'm still noticing this problem on both mine and my wife's galaxy s6 Android v7 nougat phones. Battery usage is at 8 precent, and that is after stopping the app, clearing cache and data, uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling. I have even set the app to only upload files while charging, however it still shows 8 precent battery usage throughout the day with the app only running in the background. We are using version 68.2.2. if this continues, I'll be forced to cancel my subscription, since it is burning through 1\10 of my battery every day. Included is my log from gsam detailing the apps usage.

The native battery monitor estimates that 253 mah of battery has been used, with 4 hours and 20 minutes of stay awake time. - JoakimTExplorer | Level 4
Tried installing Dropbox beta 70.2.4 but made no difference.
Will have to uninstall the app until this gets fixed :unamused:
- herrapaNew member | Level 2
Having the same issue, really annoing!
Htc 10, Android 7.0
Dropbox 70.2.4
Using camera upload, but have it set to Wi-Fi only, and only when charging. No difference if these settings are changed though.
