Dropbox/Mac: "Filename" Can't Be Found

I can't seem to see anyone else with this issue, but I've had it for a short while now & it's really annoying:

Problem: Most times when I double click to open a file I am presented with the following error. These files are already local prior to me attempting to open them. After dismissing the error & attempting to open the file a second time it is successful & no error presents itself.

Ventura 13.3.1

Dropbox 172.3.7538

Hey georgecwbrown, sorry to hear about this.

Can you please let us know if this happens with a specific type of files or if it's affecting all of your files?

Also, does this happen with online only files, files that are available offline or both?

Is the app 'up to date'  or syncing when you take this action?

Let me know and we'll take it from there, George.

This is happening to me as well and is driving me crazy!

Dropbox, if it assists, here are answers to your questions as to how this is presenting as a problem to me:

      • It is happening to all files.
      • It is happening with files that I have "ma[d]e available offline", that have a green tick next to them.  For online files, when you click the file, the file downloads and then opens.
      • The app is up-to-date and is not syncing when this is happening.

      Hi Walter,

I primarily work with .tif files so haven't trialed it out on any other variant of file. As mentioned in my first post these are all local before I click them. I moved them there from my downloads folder. I haven't had time to test it out on online only as well.

The app is up to date. I realise in that preview you're seeing a file syncing (I had just saved & closed it) next to it.

Here's an example that is currently happening:

      1. As you can see, all of these files are local.

      2. My dropbox is 'Up to Date' no activity is in progress. I have just been working with these files just minutes ago but moved them into a 'Done' folder. That's all. Now, when I attempt to open one of them after moving them, I get the following:

      3. I hit OK. I attempt to open the same file again & this time it succeeds.

Temporary Workaround: If I move or find a file that is behaving this way, I can circumvent it by selecting all of the files in that folder & attempting to open them all in one go. I will get the one error that summarises that everything failed. After that, I can then open each image without my mac attacking me with errors. (see below)

That said, this is 100% a bug & you shouldn't have to use the above workaround as it's a massive pain in the bum to do this everytime you wish to open a file.

    Hi everyone,

I'm so sorry if my issue has already been discussed somewhere, but I can't find it so that's why I'm opening this topic:

Since a couple of days I get a warning when I want to open some files. The problem only happens with excel files. This is the warning I get (translated from dutch) "Users/myname/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox/file location1/file location1.1/file location1.1.1/file location1.1.1.1/file location1.1.1.1.1/file name.xlsx could not be found. Has the file been moved or deleted or has the name been changed?"

I can only press ok (no other buttons under the warning)... I have already updated my computer (working on a macbook), deleted and reinstalled dropbox and updated excel. But nothing helps. Also, I can still do whatever I want with the files in the online version of dropbox. But the online dropbox kind of kills my workflow, so I was wondering if anyone of you could help me out and give me some peace of mind haha

    Thanks in advance everyone!
    Maiwenn

Sorry to see you're having this issue, maiwennoplinus.

Are these files currently set to online-only or available offline?

If they're online-only, can you switch them to available offline and let me know how that goes?

        Hey Hannah!

Thanks for your reply. All my files are available offline. So I don't think that's where the issue lies.
Plus yesterday I discovered that when I go to the online version of dropbox, I can open my excel files in excel for web, but when I try to download the files, I get the same error... Not sure if this additional info is helpful 🙂

        Thanks in advance,
Have a great end of your week,
        Maiwenn
