Get rid of preview pane in iPad app!

New iOS version today says I can now get rid of the Preview pane but HOW? Waited so long for this and now I can't work out how to do it!!

  • Hi Ian,

The feature is still rolling out. You'll see it soon as a X button in the top left of the preview pane.

Ok so I’m confused. So despite the app update telling me the facility is available, it isn’t?

how will it “roll out”? Do I have to wait for another app update?

      thanks

Sorted! The cross only seems to be visible in portrait mode, although the change persists when you switch back to landscape.

Since updating to iOS 13.1.2, using the Dropbox app, I'm no longer able expand the file list column over the preview area. I only get the small column on the left of the screen to see file names.

    Anyone else with this issue?
    Solution?

I have the same issue. The left column does not expand and it's really unpractical  to view long file names.

Hello LyndaL. Welcome to our Community. Hope this comment finds you starting a nice week! :coffee:

Please let me know how you use to expand the file lists column before and what version  of Dropbox you are running there at the time.

A screenshot showing the interface as you see it now, would be helpful for me to understand if things look normal on your end.

      Thank you!

This issue makes the app nearly unusable, so I hope DropBox will correct this in hours/days, not weeks/months.

      Thank you.

I'm using Dropbox on iPad and my file names are truncated.  Up until very recently it was possible to close the preview pane and have the file list take up the majority of the width.  There was even a thread about it here: https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Installs-integrations/Ipad-and-Iphone-viewing-of-long-file-names/m-p/273286#M63970

As of this evening that "x" is gone, and I'm back to staring at gibberish in my file list.  Please restore that close functionality.

We understand how much of a problem this is. I moved your feedback to this thread to add up to it.

I am confident our team will be able to resolve this with a future version of the app.

We greatly appreciate your patience. Thank you!

The mobile app has been falling behind in usability for a while now, but a recent update completely removed the ability to close the primary image view and make the thumbnail view full screen on my iPad.  Now I'm limited to only 3 thumbnails per row which makes browsing in thumbnail view so much worse than before.  I *much* preferred to be able to close that primary view and let the thumbnails fill the entire screen until I needed to view one of those images.

Please spend some time improving the iPad app.  I've reluctantly stayed with Dropbox through the years and I'd love to promote you more, but you can't keep taking away things we used and expect any positive result from it.

      Hey there JohnTheGeek

      Welcome to the Dropbox Community!

Initially,  could you please clarify if you don't see the option to preview your files as a list instead of a gallery, which is like the grid-like template that you see as you describe?

The option should be visible on the right-hand side of your screen.

Let me know what you find!

You misunderstand. I can see them in icon view. Icon view *used* to fill the entire screen. But now only fills the left column even if there is no content to display in the much larger right column.

A month ago that was not the case, and I could close the right column to expand the left column to full screen.

This has nothing to do with icon vs list view in the left column.

Since updating my iPad Pro to iOS 13.1, I have been unable to close the pop-up window on the right pane. There used to be an 'x' to close the window but not anymore.  Consequently I am unable to allow the list of files to be full screen. Any suggestions? Thank you.

      Hello wonton46! :taco:

Welcome to Community and thanks for reporting the issue you are facing here.

What version of Dropbox you have there?

How much space is left in your iPad device?

As a first step please reboot your device and let me know if things get better after that.

      Thank you! :nerd:

wonton46 I have emailed you to further work on this. :envelope:

Please respond to the email. If you can't see the email, check the spam and get back to me here to let me know.

Hi tutu! Thank you for adding your report to this relevant thread. Let me know if you have already tried to reinstall and the version of Dropbox you are running. Did the issue with the "x" missing appear after your latest update?

        Thanks!

I'm having the same problem.  There is no "X" as before on the individual photo side to the right of the file list, whether in landscape or portrait mode.  I cannot read file names that all start with the same few words.

Hello All - thanks for your reports!

I've relayed the details of this problem to our engineering team and from here, they’ll evaluate the issue at hand and work toward a solution.

While I can't say exactly how long this will take, I’ll keep a close watch on the team’s progress and we'll let you know more as soon as we have an update.

Once again, thanks for bringing this to our attention and apologies for any inconvenience this might have caused.

In early 2018 Dropbox iPad introduced full-width file lists: https://www.engadget.com/2018/04/18/dropbox-ios-full-screen-ipad/. This meant users could finally read file names longer than a dozen characters.

Dropbox iPad 162.2.6 has reverted back to a narrow sidebar file list. Most of my files are PDFs with names dozens of characters long. This latest update has rendered Dropbox essentially useless to me.

Could you restore the full-width file list feature in Dropbox ipad?

Hi JacobDrummond - welcome to the Community!

I'm writing to let you know that I moved your post under this thread as we've had some similar reports lately.

As aforementioned, the team are aware and working on it already.

Whenever I have more to share, I'll make sure to update this thread accordingly.

Thank you for your patience in the meantime Jacob.

[EDIT]: I'm UN-accepting the solution here to avoid confusion.

Same problem here, sorry to say.   Using An iPad, 6th generation, and Dropbox Basic, vers 162.2.6.   Problem of the dissapearing "X" started last week after installing ipadOS ver 13.1.2 .

Shut down and rebooted 3 or 4 times--no help.  Screen orientation doesn't matter.

Available space is 109.91 GB with 17.6 GB used (cant imagine that is a problem).

I use my iPad and Dropbox exclusively in connection with a singing/ukulele-strumming group that does charity gigs at nursing homes, hospitals, etc.   Our season is coming up!    Hope this gets fixed soon.  Thanks.

In the latest version of Dropbox for iPad, v 160 (got it on Sep 27,2019) the X on the split screen when looking at the larger size of a thumbnail photo has disappeared. This stops me from going back to full screen files or thumbnail photos.  This is a real pain as now I am restricted to 3 wide only colum of thumbnails...

how can I get the X (close) back or is this a bug?

Hello KateRobert - welcome to our Community!

At first, could you send me a screenshot of how this looks like on your end and the steps you take that result in this so I can investigate further?

In addition, have you by any chance tried to reboot your iPad to see if this resolves this matter?

Moreover, could you please try to clear the cache on your app and then sign out and back into your Dropbox account to make sure we've covered all bases?

To clear your cache, please follow the steps listed below:
      - Navigate to the “Personal” tab
      - Tap the gear icon in the upper-left corner of the screen
      - Select “Clear Cache”

Once this is done then please ensure you log out of the Dropbox application, then restart your device and log back in again.

Let me know how this goes and we'll take it from there.

EDIT: I merged your post under this thread as the issue you described seem to be related with the one outlined here.

Following the update to IOS13 the little cross marker on the file search page has disappeared with the result that I can no longer see the full file name - is anyone else having this problem?

I have an iPad Pro.  When I would go to the Files menu in the past, I used to be able to maximize it.  It would completely open up and fill the screen.  But now it stays off to the left side in a minimal form and won't expand at all.  I can't read my files or folder names, and it's driving me nuts.  I try to tap in the open space near the top, but it's completely unresponsive.  See attached picture.  Was this a programming change in the app?  If so, then WHY???  Doesn't makes any sense to change that feature.  If not, then what the heck is happening?  I really need this fixed ASAP, please.

Hey there Matt_Macgyver, thanks for reaching out to us about this.

Initially, please note that I removed some personal info included in your screenshot for privacy purposes as per Community Guidelines

From what I understand, you're unable to expand the right side of your preview as you used to previously.

I've moved your post here where other users also report the same feedback.

As @Walter and @Fiona have mentioned, our team is aware and they are looking into this.

Let us know if you have any other questions in the meantime!

I am using iPad pro and having same [profanity removed as per Community Guidelinesproblem. It is really disappointing to see that you people couldn't solve it even after month. What a [profanity removed]? You need more than a month just for a close button? If you can't give that close button back at least remove that [profanity removed] preview pane altogether as it is no much use. I am using a paid subscription and already decided not to renew is once the subscription period is over. Many other customers will do the same if you behave this much lazy to solve problems.
