blank login screen with dropbox app on windows 7 pc
Hi. I'v having issues with logging into an existing dropbox account on a windows 7 pc.
If i roll back to version 15.4.22 I can see the login and I am able to enter my userid and password but then it tells me the version of software is too old and i need to download the lastest version.
I've tried the lastest version - 24.4.17 and all I get is a blank screen. I've tried a few different versions, 18,19 and 20 versions and get the same blank screen.
Anybody have this issue? Any solution for this?
Hi dhfernz, bocceman, bluerandy
Let's go through some troubleshooting steps together about this issue.
1) Please disable your antivirus software.
Please ensure steps were followed for the configuration of your firewall and double check that the domains listed here have been allowed.
2) Please install the newest version of Dropbox with your antivirus turned off.
3) If you are using a remote connection or a virtual machine:
- Ensure the host attempting to view Dropbox is configured for 32 bit colour
- Try logging in on the actual machine rather than through a remote session
4) If none of the above won't fix this and the issue persists, please reach out to our support team so they can investigate and help.Thank you!
That’s correct, this is because the login screen for the Dropbox desktop application emulates a browser to render the page.
If the page is blank, then as has been mentioned, a proxy, VPN, firewall, security software, or even ISP/router settings are blocking or restricting connections to Dropbox servers.
Despite that, in some cases the block isn’t complete, so the ‘invisible fields’ for email and password can be clicked there.
Even after you login and get past the tour page, you’re still going to experience sporadic behavior and syncing, since the underlying problem remains and hasn’t been resolved.
Aside from the above troubleshooting for the VPN etc, I’d personally check out your router, since most modern ones have firewalls built into there and could be logging these requests and blocking them.
Try rebooting your router, updating its firmware, or resetting it to factory defaults, after making a note of your broadband username and password.
Other matters to consider are ISP issues, which you would need to check with them since if the connection is affected before your router receives it, there’s little you can do from your end…[This thread is now closed. If you have a similar or new question, you can ask here.]
- We still support Windows 7 and above, only Windows Vista recently became unsupported for the desktop app.In general, a blank login screen, or any issues during that specific setup phase of the Dropbox desktop application is connection-based issues. This is why I suggested checking out anything that can affect the connection, that being proxies, VPN, firewall, antivirus, or other security software. We have received similar reports in the past, from entire regions, where the setup phase isn’t being completed. Turns out the ISP was blocking these Dropbox domains from connecting. If you’re still experiencing these issues, even after contacting your ISP, we’d recommend writing to us directly, so that our team can assist further on this matter.

[Added 28 Sep 2017] If you are not using Gmail for Dropbox but actually have one, I guess (not personally tried though) you can change your email to Gmail (https://help.dropbox.com/account/change-email), log in, and change the email back?
--------------------------
Here may be a solution for someone using Gmail as their login email (https://help.dropbox.com/desktop-web/google-sign-in).
I reinstalled Dropbox in my laptop about a month ago when Dropbox cannot start normally after updated to some new version. After the reinstallation I cannot login because of the blank set up window. I've tried different solutions but none of them worked. Disabling firewall and antivirus didn't work; I've tried all historical stable versions and some beta versions; the Tab-username-Tab-pwd or mouseover trick didn't work; occasionally the normal set up window showed up but I cannot type in anything. Today I suddenly realized that the "Sign in with Google" option may work.
The normal set up window should look like this: http://bit.ly/2wXPMGn. Now referring to this normal set up window, click the corresponding area of "Sign in with Google" in your blank set up window. A web page will pop up allowing you to sign into Dropbox with your Google account. Follow the instructions and you will be taken back to the blank set up window again which will in fact look like this (captured from http://bit.ly/2f3pYo7, 3'17").
There is an "Advanced settings" in the bottom of this window where you can customize the location of your Dropbox folder; unfortunately, you may not be able to do this if you still have a blank window. Now if you are installing Dropbox on a new computer, close this blank window and Dropbox will sync to the default location. If you already have a Dropbox folder in another location, and you don't want to repeat downloading all these files, you can refer to this post http://bit.ly/2w6grDM but I will suggest you doing it VERY VERY carefully, otherwise you may end up having numerous conflicting files like I did.
Hope this helps.

Good Idea! I could detect the field "Sign Up", Clicked it - but not then a short flicker ..
Also could then detect another Field, that brings up "Terms of Service"
Did not work for me ...

this is ridiculously frustrating!! I use Dropbox on my Mac fine, but my Win7 Pro laptop, this version of dropbox app will not load. I get the same stupid white box that will not allow me to type in my info and login. come on now, there has got to be a fix for this as obviously a lot of people are frustrated with this issue.

So I just was able to sign in not using my gmail, but having the same problem.
The thing to remember here is the that the fields to input the information are there dispite not being visible. To test to see if you are having this problem, you can try to click where the "Sign in with Google" button should be. You should be linked to a web page or have a dialog box open. Alternatively if you have another Dropbox account with Google and don't want to sign into that one, you can see if the cursor changes when you hover over where the input boxes for the username and password.
Now that you know you are having this problem, it's simple just input your username and password without knowing what your typing :D easier said than done, but I have done it. I recommend making sure that you know your password and testing signing-in online as well as before typing hitting the backspace a few times. Your not going to be able to see if you password it wrong.
Once you have done that you are prompted with another blank box. This is just the Dropbox intro slides. To get passed this you just need to make sure you and the box selected and then mash the 'tab' key followed by the 'spacebar' a few times. Then you should be in.

I had the same issue Windows 7 Pro (32bit) clean install. Downloaded the current version of windows desktop app v26.4.24 and got the blank sign-in pop up screen. The issue I have found to be to do with Internet Explorer default settings (regardles of the browser you use) as IE is still part of the OS in Win 7 and nothing to do with firewalls or AV software. This has worked at home and at work on Desktop and Laptops running windows 7 (32bit and 64 bit)
This is what worked for me:
1. Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet and click Internet Options
2. The Internet Properties window will pop up. Then click the Security tab
3. Then click Trusted Sites (green tick) icon and click the Sites button
4. Where is says "Add this website to the zone:" type: https://www.dropbox.com and then click the Add button
5. Click Close button, Apply button, OK button
6. Exit the dropbox app in the system tray.
7. Reboot your PC
You should now see the pop up with the dropbox logo, google sign in and normal sign in window clearly. Hope this helps.

I understand the issue. I'm one like you before. After spending few hours, here is the method that works perfectly to sync the files to the computer when the login page goes blank. So, as a YouTuber, I have made a video on the same. Check it and thank me later :)

Ticket 5901904
Been struggling with this for over a month now.
Rest IE to default. Added dropbox.com as a Trusted Site.
Video drivers updated. Yes.
Did the Open GL varible. No change
Repaired .Net 4.7
No AV and Firewalls are off.
Been messing with compatiblity settings this afternoon.
App is set with Vista SP2 and run as admin.
The screen appears now but I can't type in it. The Google button works, forgot password link works. But the Email, Password and Sign In fields do not.
If I turn off compatiblity options and run normally I get the blank screen. Fix your app Dropbox.

Using a Windows 7 Home Premium computer operating 64 bit operating system
My drop box app crashed and would not work, even after restarting the computer. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program with no luck. The issue that I am having it states "waiting to be linked". I've clicked on it multiple times and a new window appears, but it is just a blank white window. The version of dropbox that was installed is
39.4.49.
I don't know what else to do to fix these issues. Any suggestions?
Jimmy
- user45New member | Level 2I have Windows 7 Home Premium and I am experiencing this issue. Mine looks the same as Jimmy's. I tried a stable build 15.4.22 which was suggested here: https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Installation-and-desktop-app/Blank-SignIn-Dialog/m-p/199481/highlight/true#M41653
The stable build showed the login fields but after trying to sign in, it said I had an old version and had to update. So I did, and saw the fields once with the newest version, but nothing would happen. Closed and re-opend DB and the login fields were gone.
Ouch:

Having the Same issues on a Windows 7 machine.
Have done the following to no Avail:
- uninstalled dropbox
- installed various versions, and beta builds.
- managed to insert loging credentials on build 15.4.22 but it advised it as an old version, I need to upgrade.
- uninstalled all anti virus
- turned off windows firewall
- wiped the machine clean and reinstalled windows to have a clean registry
- logged a ticket with support staff which gave me a generic reply which yielded no results. ticket 5513270
- used another internet connect to ensure there is no blocking of SSL
- no proxies are used
- no VPN is used
i am too scared to unlink the dropbox on another machine, as i fear to have the same issue.
Can Dropbox please perioritize this issue?

I can confirm this problem and the only solution seems to type username and (tab) password blindly. It works after that but the notification screen stays the same kind of black. Another solution to use a previous version -15.4.22- came with the "right" (white) screen but then failed to connect because I was using an old version (duh). I hope this will be solved soon.

Hi, me too; the same problems.
- jperkinsHelpful | Level 6
I would like to get the Windows 7 (64-bit) Dropbox desktop client working for a number of users in our department. However, after installing the desktop client, I can not login to Dropbox.
The installation succeeds on our Windows 7 workstations, but when starting Dropbox I only see a "Set Up Dropbox" window that is all white; there is no login/password box presented in that window.
How does one get around this? The product doesn't work particularly well if one can't get logged in.
So far, I have tried 18.4.32, 19.4.13 and 20.3.17 (beta) offline installers; they all exhibit the same behavior.

Hello,
As a first step I would recommend downloading the latest stable version of the Dropbox app .
Then make sure that you use the latest drivers for your graphics card on your system. Please note that trying to install Dropbox in a VM software environment could cause such issues.
If the issue persists, please contact our Support Team and submit a ticket about this, we'll be happy to look into it further.
Thank you!

When I try to activate the Windows app (on Win 7), I get a blank dialog box. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Dropbox twice on this machine with no joy. This used to work fine until about two weeks ago (Windows update?). Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this?

I have a couple of Enterprise Macs running Sierra 10.12.3, and I am unable to setup the Desktop app on them. On both I receive a Blank White screen after launching the application from the Applications Folder. I am currenty trying to install version 19.4.13. I thought the issue was the Mobile Device Management software we use, Airwatch, was the issue. After removing Airwatch however, the issue persists. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
- denismcdNew member | Level 2
I experienced the same issue this week setting up a new Mac. After traying many different resolutions without success, I was able to resolve the issue by setting DropBox app to run in 32-bit mode. Once I made that change, the sign in dialog appears normally. Once I signed in I changed it back to 64-bit mode and it works great.
- Install DropBox desktop application.
- Open your Applicatons Folder.
- Righ Click DropBox application > Get Info
- Check "Open in 32-bit Mode"
- Close the dialog box
- Launch DropBox desktop application and sign in.
- Repeat steps 2 - 5 (uncheck "Open in 32-bit mode"
- Restart the application.
Hope this helps someone. I spent hours on this.

I am also having the same issue with the blank login screen, even after completly disabling the firewall. The 'workaround' of simply trying to guess where the username/pw prompts are works OK for the personal account, but then when i try to add a linked account, that screen also comes up as blank and doesn't appear to follow the same layout. File version 22.4.24.0

I get the same. I'm using Windows 7. Installation seems to go OK then get a "Set Up Dropbox" screen pop. Screen then gets 2 columns of numbers - possibly files sizes- then sticks.
- A_ZNew member | Level 2What I did to fix this is to download the Stable build first:
https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Desktop-client-builds/Stable-Build-15-4-22/m-p/195732#M3502
Then try to login with Stable Build.
It will give you an error saying your version is too old after you hit Login. Now install the newer version directly. And it will try to login again.

Hey a7med3wedan,
Thanks for getting in touch with us on Community with this screenshot, much appreciated!
As my colleague Zed mentioned above, usually this is because of an Antivirus, firewall, proxy setting or network domain blocking Dropbox.
If you have followed the steps above and this persists, I'd be more than glad to investigate this case with you. Could you please log a ticket and let me know a ticket ID in your reply, so that I follow-up?
Thanks in advance for your cooperation, looking forward to hearing back from you!
