Decryption fails running iOS 14.2
Just updated iPhone and iPad to iOS 14.2. Now, trying to open an encrypted file, it tell me "Decryption Failed. Null" If I open with Excel, it works fine. Anyone else having this issue?
I also have success opening an encrypted file within Dropbox after updated 14.4 IOS update. Thanks for everyone's help and input.

Install Excel on your iPhone and you can open password protected/encrypted files with no problem.

I loaded Excel onto my iPad Air and it still comes up with the Decryption Fail error message. This has to be a Dropbox issue as too many people are experiencing the same proble.
- NealwaldHelpful | Level 7Please read all the posts. This is NOT a drop box issue. You should be able to open the document with excel or office for iOS. It is occurring with many apps including Microsoft one drive. Apple has changed they way the handle password protected office docs. I beg you to take the time to read the full thread.

Everyone is talking about Excel but I don't have ANY saved Excel files in Dropbox, only WORD files.
The problem only appears on my phone iPhone 11, NOT my computer. Dropbox.
I have not found a useful thread about this issue yet and do not understand some of the remarks people are saying, they are obviously more computer techno savvy than me.
Some people talk about resaving WORD files but how do I do that on my phone if I can't open the file? Do I go into my computer Dropbox and resave all the WORD files in Dropbox to something else. Most are saved as .docx, what I should I try and resave them as?
Do I do this on my computer Dropbox?
Like I say, most of the remarks are not helpful for me.
- brucedstoutExplorer | Level 4Select the Word file you want to open. A screen will appear with a field for that document’s password. Leave the password field blank and select, at the bottom of that screen, the icon that is a small square with a line from its center to its upper right corner. A new screen will appear with a password field. Enter your password in that field and your Word document will open.
- NealwaldHelpful | Level 7Same issue trying to open excel files won’t iOS 14.2,from mobile outlook. File dirs open directly from excel. This seems to be an iOS 14.2 issue. Apple needs to take note ASAP.

Yes. I just had the identical error message appear.

Same problem here on my Ipad and iphone
All Excel files with password protection give a decryption error when tryong to open them after giving the correct password.
I Saw this also happens With SYNC (another cloud service)
So it is a Apple IOS 14.2 problem.

After an update WORD and EXEL by Microsoft, the problem has been solved.
- Stephen_NYHelpful | Level 6
Sorry, the MS update did NOT resolve the problem for me. I updated my MS Office over a week ago. The problem really seems to be the iOS 14.2 update. Everything was working fine until I updated my iPad and iPhone. Immediately aferwards I had the problem with encrypted documents not opening in DropBox.
- IaincarsHelpful | Level 5If you mean version 2.43 from a day ago then I have this installed but the problem remains
- JohnK2Collaborator | Level 8
Laincars is correct, the issue is not resolved!

I have all my passwords in a file in dropbox, till a few day ago I could open the file through a password without problem on the iphone (IOS 14.2), lately I receive the message "decryption failed null" I then have to open the original word file in dropbox and it functions correctly, what is the cause of this problem?

I have the same issue. I am on iPhone 8 running iOS 14.2.
Get the "decryption failed (null)" message, and it looks like an iOS issue. To overcome the problem, I installed Excel, signed in and click on the "Open" blue button on the "encryption null" screen on Dropbox and it opens the relevant file (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) in the Excel, Word or PowerPoint app. Enter the password and it unlocks the file. It's not seamless as opening it from the Dropbox app, but it allows to view (and edit) the file to say the least.
- MissMCNew member | Level 2Hi
Issue just happened.
I can access all spreadsheets on all other devices.
On iPhone I can only access unprotected excel. The protected ones says failed (null).
Please help :-)- LusilDropbox Staff
Hey MissMC, thanks for checking in.
I moved your post here, where other users have also described this issue.
Have a look around at what is mentioned, and let me know if you'd like to further investigate this with us.
Also, Deacon Art, I'd be happy to send you a ticket if you haven't gotten in touch with our Support team yet.
Just give me a nudge, thanks!
- ltxHelpful | Level 6Sorry, I really don’t understand why Lusil or Daphne cannot be proactive and submit the trouble ticket themselves to work with Apple to get this resolved. We know it’s a problem. Many of us have described having the same issue, gave the steps to reproduce the issue, and it was reported six days ago. All the information for Dropbox to start investigating is already here.

Hi, I have same . I have similar problem after update to iOS 14.2. Anybody has found solution?
- IaincarsHelpful | Level 5Yes. I assume you have excel (office 365) also installed on your phone. When you get the null error message select the icon at top righthand side of screen. Its the square with upward arrow. You should then see excel as an option. Select this, enter file password and it works fine. Same for pw protected word files.

Thanks - this works fine
- tflynnExplorer | Level 3My situation was the same as JohnK2 experienced
- tflynnExplorer | Level 3I tried an experiment. I put 2 excel spreadsheets on Dropbox. 1 of them I password protected, the other one I didn’t password protect. I was able to open the one that I didn’t password protect, but was unable to open the one that was password protected. I am able to open the password protected one on my computer, but not on my I-phone
