What happens to my files when I cancel my subscription?
Hi, what will happen to my Files if I cancel my subscription? I have dropbox plus and the number of GB I keep there is more than the limit of the non-paying versions.
There are also many important files which are not on my PC anymore and I should download them.
Once I've done it, will I have a certain time to download everything?
Or will all the files remain available for downloading?
Nothing happens to your files when your subscription expires. At most, if you're over your storage quota when your subscription expires you simply won't be able to sync your files, but they'll remain accessible through the Dropbox website. Your files are not deleted or removed from the account.
If you're no longer seeing your files, something else is the cause.

Let's say I upgrade to 3TB trial then I downgrade to 2TB paid but I exceeded the 2tb limit during the trial. What will happen?
- MeganDropbox Staff
Hi K0D1M, happy Thursday!
Please be aware that if your account is ever downgraded, Dropbox will not delete any of your files.
Dropbox will only sync until you hit your quota, so if you are over quota all that should happen is that Dropbox will not sync any new files or changes.
I hope this clarifies.

Files won't be deleted. You can still find them all in your drive yet you cannot sync anymore. You can only delete. Yet any update or newly added files can't be saved in the driver anymore unless it goes down to your original memory space.

I've accumulated 27gb in my free Basic Dropbox account lifetime. My question is that if I sign up for a monthly Plus subscription and then cancel after 6 months or a year, will I go back to the 27gb in the free Basic account that I accumulated previously? Or, will that be gone, and I have to start over with the free 2gb of Basic? Thanks in advance.

Hi dropz, I'd be happy to answer that for you!
Generally, yes you get to keep the space you've earned when you downgrade, but also it depends on where the space is coming from.
If it's all coming from referrals, then yes nothing changes but the value of the referral space. However keep in mind that if some of the space is coming from promotions, they might expire. Not during the downgrade, but while you're using either the Basic, or Plus plan.
I hope that clarifies.

And if yes, can i get them back?- RichSuper User II

If, however, your account is idle for more than a year while on a non-paid account, it will be deleted due to inactivity. When this happens, it's not possible to recover the account now the files within it.
- KBennett23New member | Level 2Hi,
If I buy a basic personal subscription to Dropbox and upload all of my photos to it (as my way of backing up my photos), what then happens to them if I cancel the subscription?
I.e if I upload 500GB worth of photos, but then 12 months later I decide Dropbox is too expensive and I want to cancel the subscription, what happens to the 500GB of photos? Can I still access them? I.e download them onto a phone or computer? How long do they stay available?- HannahDropbox Staff
Hey KBennett23, thanks for posting your question here.
When you cancel a Dropbox subscription and you have lots of files, what happens is you just go over quota.
As long as you keep accessing your account, your files will still be in it, but you won't be able to add new ones and of course they won't be syncing across your devices.
You can, however, access and download them at any time.

You won't be able to make changes to the files in your account, but they'll still be accessible. Files are not deleted if you're over your quota.
If your account remains idle for more than a year, it will be deleted (along with all content) due to inactivity.

I upgraded my account from Basic (with 13GB, I have had this account for ages) to Plus. I decided to downgrade due to financial reasons and now I'm back to 2GB. What happened to the 11 GB I earned over the years? Can somebody help explain?
- MeganDropbox Staff
Hi fionski, I'd be more than happy to help!
Was the space that you're talking about related to your referrals, or any related promos, that might have expired? Is it possible that you have two Dropbox accounts?
Keep in mind that, all the referrals you have earned would remain on your account when you upgrade or downgrade.
Bear in mind that they'll be worth 500 MB if you are on a Basic account, in relation to the 1 GB space they are worth if you are on a paid subscription.
Keep me posted!

I just got an email that my plan will be downgraded. I don't need Dropbox anymore, although I need access to the files I have on it.
Will I lose all the files unless I continue wit the current plan?
Right now I use 650 GB out of the (new plan's storage) that is 2 GB.
Thank you,

You won't lose access to your files if you downgrade. You just won't be able to sync anymore, and you won't be able to add or modify files in your account. Your files will remain accessible both on the Dropbox website and the files that are synced on your computer.
If your account remains idle for more than a year then it could be deleted due to inactivity. If this happens your files would be deleted as well, without the means to recover. If you plan on leaving files in your account, make sure you sign in regularly.

- robblesNew member | Level 2If I cancel my monthly payment for extra dropbox storage, will I loose all my photos and videos I have saved on there allready? How does it work when you cancel? Do I need to transfer everything off there before cancelling? Anyones help and knowledge would be appreciated.

How does it work when you cancel? If you cancel your account will revert back to the amount of space you had prior to upgrading (2GB by default). If you have more than 2GB of files at that time, Dropbox will start to warn you about being over your quota. If you remain over your quota for an extended period, Dropbox may start to remove files, starting with the newest, to get you back below your quota.
If you're not over your quota after you downgrade, nothing will happen to your files provided that your account stays active (sign in at least once a year). If the account goes idle for more than a year, the account and files will be deleted due to inactivity.

Hi,
I'd like to downgrade my Team Dropbox to Dropbox Professional because my business scaled down from 3 to 1 person.
I already removed my two team members, so I'm the only person in the team.I've read I have to cancel my Team Plan, and I'll fall back to Dropbox Basic.
I use 1,5 TB right now, so that's much more than the 2GB in a Basic plan.
If I upgrade the Basic plan to a Professional plan afterwards, will all my folders and files still be there?
I don't want to loose any files when I cancel my Team plan.
Thanks!
