Decryption fails running iOS 14.2
Just updated iPhone and iPad to iOS 14.2. Now, trying to open an encrypted file, it tell me "Decryption Failed. Null" If I open with Excel, it works fine. Anyone else having this issue?
I also have success opening an encrypted file within Dropbox after updated 14.4 IOS update. Thanks for everyone's help and input.

- Actually nothing but downloading the Excel app on the phone and use it to open the protected document in dropbox. Until dropbox fix it as it was before ios14.2, of course

- Thanks for posting this about 14.2. I’m running 14.2 on iPhone 8 with no issue when I use the password to open my secured document, but my wife can’t do it on her iPad running 14.2. Seems inconsistent based on other comments that it’s on one or both. I’ve had iOS 14 for about a week with no issues on this topic, and I just downloaded 14.2 on iPad for my wife yesterday, and then it quit working. I have Excel and it also opens the document with no issue, however she does not have it installed, so not sure if there’s a correlation or not. Any updates from Dropbox on this issue will be appreciated and sooner rather than later please. Thanks!
- I am having the same problem on IPhone 11 running IOS 14.2.
I'm experiencing the same problem. I found that going back to the original Word document, and resaving it as a .doc file (not .docx) is a workaround.
When you do this, you may get a warning that .doc file encryption isn't as strong as .docx encyption; I think that could be a clue to what is happening, and the problem is that ios14.2 has a problem with the stronger encyption. But falling back to .doc is a temporary workaround until Apple fixes the problem.
Did we ever get a solution to this or do I have to give up on Dropbox?
You won't get a solution until Apple releases a fix. All we have are work arounds as posted in this thread.

Also, what are the exact steps you're taking when you get this error?
When you mentioned opening the file through Excel, was this by opening the file through the Files app, or after exporting the file from Dropbox?

Also, on my iPhone, I open dropbox and go to that combo file. Enter my password and get the result above. If i click on the "open" button, then I am able to open in Excel with my password. Never had to do this before my iOS upgrade yesterday. My wife's phone has the exact same issue. We are able to open on our macs but not our iPads or iPhones.

- Same here with a word document. Strange though, as I have 2 encrypted docs on Dropbox... one opens, the other doesn’t.
I am having exactly the same problem. I upgraded my iPhone and iPad to iOS 14.2 yesterday. Today I cannot open password-protected Word files on DropBox on either device. I get the same message as was posted earlier. I can open up files without a password but not any with a password. I hope there can be a fix or workaround for this.

Why? Yep, upgraded to iOS 14.2 and I'm getting the "encryption failed (null)" error too, when trying to open a password-protected MS Word doc in my Dropbox app.

I did find a temporary work around. If you have MS Word installed as an app on your devices, you can open the document that is password-protected through Word via DropBox. This allows your to enter the password. I am not sure if it is the same if the issue affects Excel. I still am hoping for an update with a fix from either Apple or DropBox. Do the DropBox admins ever comment on these threads or is it just users?

I have updated to apple software to 14.2. I am trying to open a file that is NOT encrypted, and I get a message that "decryption failed. null." Can anyone help me?
- Walter, I have rebooted the device, and I still have the problem. As many others have said, this seems to be an issue with password-protected documents, whether or not they are encrypted. I can access the dropbox file from my laptop. It is only an issue on my phone (which has the iOS update installed.
Depuis quelque temps j'ouvre mon fichier protégé par mot de passe avec excel ce qui m'embête profondément. Ce problème je l'ai uniquement lorsque j'utilise mon IPhone (XR). Avec les autres appareils, sous Windows, je n'ai pas ce problème.
Ce n'est pas sûr que Microsoft fasse quelque chose pour régler ça.
Tant que la petite gueguerre qui se livrent les deux géants, Microsoft et Apple, persiste, nous les utilisateurs, allons devoir choisir notre camp pour ne pas avoir à subir de bugs. Ils savent qu'on n'aime pas qu'on nous sorte du petit confort où tout marche bien. La preuve est ce forum où l'on perd notre temps précieux à chercher la petite bête qui ne fonctionne pas. C'est exactement ce que Microsoft ou Apple cherchent: fidéliser le consommateur à une seule marque. C'est dans l'air du temps la polarisation, non?
Nous avons probablement de la chance qu'Apple nous permette même d'installer un produit Microsoft sur un téléphone Apple. Son affaire, ne le prenez pas personnellement :)
We are probably lucky that Apple even allows us to install a Microsoft product on an Apple phone. Its business, don't take it personally :)
