ubuntu 23.10 stopped working "isn't running / is already running"

Been using dropbox on ubuntu desktop for years, sometime late last week it stopped working.  Phone app is uploading photos, I can login to web browser and see photos, but on the desktop ubuntu system the ubuntu app says it "is running" and says "it isn't running".  Rebooted, reinstalled it, no change

dpkg reports "ii dropbox 2024.01.22 amd64 cloud synchronization engine - CLI and Nautilus extension"

The screen icon top right is visible, but clicking on it displays a blank drop-down menu with no visible text where any of the options should be

Thanks Jay, I thought I'd managed to completely remove it the two or three other times, but that seems to have made it work.  Only minor problem encountered was that each time it reinstalled it used a new license (stupidly not realising it was the same system), so each time I had to manually go to the website and delete the previous one to get back a device I could use
