How to free up space in your Dropbox account
I've unshared many folders, permanently deleted lots of files but dropbox still reports that it is full. How can I free up space? I've already followed dropbox instructions with no results
Permanently deleting files isn't needed to clear space. Simply deleting them is enough. Files in the Deleted Files section do not count against your storage quota.
If Dropbox is saying your account is full, then it's still full. You need to remove enough files to bring your account back below your quota before that message will go away. It could be that you're still a member of a large share that just keeps filling your account as you make more room.
You can verify your storage usage on your Account page. It will show you a breakdown of what's using your storage (regular files, shared files, etc.), which hat may help you identify files that you can remove to free up some more space.

Checked your Backups page yet? When does it show for your actual usage on your Plan page? Provide a screenshot if you can. It should look like this:

Hey thank you for your answer! My storage plan looks like this right now. I don't use the back up as of now, how can i install that?

I absolutely agree with you. Every day I get the "Delete files" for more storage email. They are deleted.

If you're getting the email, then your storage is still full or close to being full. Check your Plan page and it will show you where your space is being used.

Dropbox says I am over my limit so I deleted nearly all my files (I think) but I still have an alert saying I am over my limit. Maybe I don't understand how to fully delete files?

Hi there, Howard Jennings, thanks for reaching out to us.
Is it possible that you have any shared folders or backups that are taking up your space?
What do you see in your plan tab regarding your usage?

Looks like this is an old answer and may no longer be valid.
I cut/pasted files from Dropbox to my PC. It still says I'm way over quota. It looked like what's taking up quota is Dropbox\.dropbox.cache\new_files, so I also cut 'em all and pasted them to my PC for backup. It still says I'm way over quota. What can I do? I had a peek inside several of the cached items, and they consist completely of blanks. Is this normal? ...and why does Dropbox continually add these files and never delete them? That's where all the space is being taken up.

The items in the .dropbox.cache folder don't take up space in your account, only on your local drive. The folder is necessary for sync operations. You can delete the content of the folder, but Dropbox will just recreate it as needed. Deleting anything in the folder will have no impact on your space usage.
Your Plan page will show you a breakdown of your space usage. Have you checked your Backups page?

Need a little help here. Long term user of Basic.
Want to remove unused files, and get back below 2G, and restart sync.
Can't quite get the hang of this. Read the "help" and tried the "AI Chat-Box"
Anyone actually done this?
Thanks

Cabt I just delete photos in Drop Box instead of increasing to 3mg?
- HannahDropbox Staff
Hey Karen D.22, thanks for reaching out to us.
If you'd like to clear up some space in your Dropbox account, of course you can delete some files, if you don't need them.
Or if you need them, you can download them to your computer first and then delete them.
I hope this helps!

How do I find out what is using my Dropbox storage?
I want to delete EVERYTHING.
How do I delete ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING SINGLE THING IN MY DROPBOX FOLDER???????????????
I MEAN EVERYTHING.
- HannahDropbox Staff
Hey pforkes!
This page should show you all the files in your Dropbox account.
You can delete any unwanted files from there.
And you can use these steps to calculate the size of your folders and files, in case you want to check out what's taking up your space.
