Loading Excel Files from C: Drive is Slow

When DropBox is running, my Windows 10 File Explorer is slow (8 seconds) to open Excel Files on C: drive

When DropBox is not running, File Explorer loads Excel files instantly.

It happens on all my PCs that run DropBox.

For some reason, it is only affects loading Excel files from Windows 10 File Explorer (Word, etc... works fine)

  • I had the same issue and found a workaround which works for me

    -> Open TaskManager

    -> Navigate to Startup

    -> Select Dropbox and push the mouse's right button for properties

    -> Got to the Table Compatibility

    -> Check the checkbox for "run this program as an administrator"

    -> Reboot your computer

    Dropbox wil run as administrator

    It solved the problem for me

      Thanks for sharing the workaround. It seems really working for me too. Though I don't use autostart for dropbox but running the client via "Run as administrator" context menu did the trick for me too.

        Nice to hear it works for you too.

        Now the question remains why this workaround solves this problem!!

    I'm having exactly the same reprodusable issue. When dropbox is running .xsl or .xlsx files are opening very slow - about 10 seconds delay before Excel logo. Right after I quite dropbox agent in the tray - xls files are opening immediately. When I re-run dropbox I experience delayed opening again.

    I use Excel 2010 and Windows 10. My rig is really good, it's core i7, 16gb RAM and SSD so can't be lack of performance.

    It's my daily workflow to write excel reports at the end of the day, drop box is running all the time too.

    The problem began emerging about a week ago, maybe a bit more.

        Hey there jpinson & quadroval; how are you today?

        I'm sorry to jump in here, but I just wanted to ask if you have tried reinstalling both our desktop app and the Microsoft Excel one on the affected computers to see if it improves matters.

        If you haven't yet, can you give it a go and let us know how it goes?

      I noticed the problem with Dropbox started about 2 weeks ago. I temporarily switched over to Microsoft OneDrive until this issue gets resolved by Dropbox. Now my Excel files load instantly from Windows 10 File Explorer.

      Hey jpinson, could you try another browser?

      If that doesn't do the trick, could you check your email's inbox?

        I tried Microsoft Edge, Chrome and Opera browsers and cleared history in each and it doesn't view the ticket either.

        At least I do get emails from DropBox about responses to my questions.

        Any other ideas?

    Hey jpinson, thanks for checking in with us.

    If you haven't already, could you have a look at this article, which mentions a few ways to tackle an overall computer slow-down?

    Check it out and let me know if it helps. Cheers!

      Unfortunately, the tips did not work for me.

      There is only 1 small Excel file in my Dropbox folder.

      The delay (8 seconds) happens even when opening very small Excel files in another folder on the C: (SSD) drive.

      When I exit Dropbox, there is no delay when opening Excel files from Windows 10 File Explorer.

      Any other ideas?

        I forgot to mention that CPU utilization is always under 10% and Memory usage is at 5GB of 16GB.
