This is exactly the kind of answer I feared.
Pessimistic scenario: the reply to Zoltan's email was based upon misunderstanding/misidentifiying the issue, as it often happens in this kind of communication. There won't be any firmware update and we are let behind by Pocketbook even though they are fully responsible for implementing the Dropbox API in a way that allows for software compatibility issue over time
Optimistic scenario: the reply to Jared was based upon internal miscommunication in the company, and we will soon get the beloved update.

I am using the app PocketBook (I assume that's what we're talking about) and I did some digging and found out what was wrong. Every time I clicked the "sync" button, it was like it wasn't regestering the click, so I went to Dropbox, then to Settings, to Security, and then scrolled down to the "linked apps" and found PocketBook in the list.
Apps linked
You've given these apps access to your personal Dropbox.App name Publisher Access typePocketBook e-reader PocketBook e-reader App folder
Looks like this.^^
Above each column are APP NAME, PUBLISHER, ACCESS TYPE
So I knew that PocketBook only has access to the App folder, so I went to find that folder.
It is in Files
So I went to Files
- Recents
- Files
- Team
- Paper
- Photos
- Sharing
- Links
- Events
- File requestsWent to the Folder Apps (the app PocketBook created it automatically, because I didn't)then, I went back to the PocketBook app on my phone and swiped down. It "synced" and I got my books. So, it's just a lot of maneuvering to get to the books. It's not all automatic.Hope this helps!Mad Hatter

I had a similar issue where the pocketbook would not sync properly with dropbox. The issue was a file that hat several special characters in the filename. Renaming the file made the sync work perfectly. It was diffiult to bugfix because the Pocketbook error suggested it was a general network error (not connected to the internet) even though the wifi was working and the sync would actually start and abort after a while.
TLDR: Check your filenames and remove special characters from files you want to sync with your Pocketbook
