43 TopicsBest practices for using symlinks (symbolic links)
Hi there, I use dropbox on linux with symlinks, but am not sure which is the best/preferred way to use them. Is there a best practice for using this type of configuration? Currently I use symlinks in my home directory that point to the actual folders in my Dropbox folder, but I have heard of doing the inverse: placing symlinks in the dropbox folder pointing out into the home directory. Are there pros and cons to symlinking from the Dropbox folder to the home directory vs. placing a symlink in the home folder linking to inside the Dropbox folder? What happens during a catastrophic failure triggering a need for data restoration, which method is preferred? Is there a way to dynamically create links for new entries (like .* folders)? Is there an advantage/disadvantage to using soft vs. hard linking? Any links/posts with regards to the above would be most appreciated. I acknowledge that Dropbox does not fully support symbolic links, but find them so useful I am committed to using them. Thanks in advance!Solved23KViews1like32CommentsLinux Dropbox: fatal python exception

Hi, Dropbox tray icon says it is "Connecting..." forever. I cannot see the list of the latest modified files as it used to show or use the tray, actually. I am using Linux Ubuntu 22.04 (but it like that since the 19.10, I suppose) The currently installed version of Dropbox is 149.4.4568 I also don't have the "Early releases" enabled as you can see in the following screenshot. I also tried to remove `.dropbox` and `.dropbox-dist` manually to reinstall them cleanly. You can check the date and time it was reinstalled here.Solved17KViews3likes73Comments“something similar” to SCP for Dropbox
I'm trying to backup some file on my Linux server to Dropbox. I do *NOT* want to install Dropbox on my server as I do *NOT* want any of the files on my Dropbox account to be on this server. I'm looking for something similar to SCP, so it will look like this: scp backupDocument.txt mydropbox:/folder/save Basically I should be able to copy a file from my server and paste that file into my Dropbox account without needing to install Dropbox on the actual server.Solved14KViews0likes11CommentsSync a folder via terminal
How can I sync a folder via terminal in Linux? I had installed Dropbox to that machine, but only synced one folder and now I need to work remotely from my Mac. I don't have 'physical access' anymore, so I need to activate and sync a second folder remotely. There is no option to open an interface (e.g. open nautilus via xQuartz) and do it with mouse. Thanks alot!Solved13KViews0likes3CommentsDual booting with shared DB drive possible?
I am looking in to buying a new laptop and will need to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. I am planning three SSD's - one for Windows, one for Ubuntu and one as a shared data drive. Is it possible to set up DB so that both operating systems cansync to the shared data drive? I have done a bit of research on here and I cannot seem to find a definitive answer. Thanks!Solved12KViews1like28CommentsDropbox not syncing Ubuntu 18.04 LTS dropbox v87.4.138
Dear Community, I have been using Dropbox for a while on my laptop running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Now, I am using the dropbox client v87.4.148 and the app seems ok apart from the syncing issue. The logo on the right top corner of the desktop is showing the updating wheel, when I click on it I see syncing and I have the opportunity to stop the sync. However, the folder remains empty. Anyone has experienced this before ? And by the way, happy new year ! Best, JayCnCySolved10KViews0likes13CommentsSyncing problem on one Linux
Hi all! After installing Dropbox v79.4.143 on Lubuntu 18.04 (64bit) I log in to my account and downloads start to ~/Dropbox folder normally. After downloading all my files, none changes in files detected and not synced to the cloud. I am read all manuals and make anything reinstall reboot unlink-link account remove the package, delete hidden Dropbox directories install it again tried deb instead apt-get check firewall etc Dropboxes on 2 different stations work fine (Mac & identical Lubunu) At this moment with all movement listed earlier, Icould get 2 states of the Problem 1) Fresh downloaded directory which not upload changed files (no moving arrows in the icon ). Changed files tracked as changed - but not uploading there happens 2) The hanging system with spinning arrows in the icon, but none sync indeed. All files marked as not tracked $ dropbox filestatus Dropbox/New\ Signifer/ Dropbox/New Signifer/: unwatched $ dropbox status Syncing... Any ideas?Solved8.1KViews1like7Comments
