I don't have a group account--whatever that is--so can't "unlink." Still a red icon in my dropbox app.

Hey CelticLass, if I understand correctly, you seem to have an unread notification on your Dropbox icon, even though you don't.
Can you please let us know if you've tried any of the other troubleshooting steps in this thread and how it went?
What is your OS version and your Dropbox version and sync status?
You can see the latter, by hovering over the Dropbox icon in your system tray/menu bar.
