When will online-only files work on Linux?
I need to save space on my hard drive. Online-only files would be the perfect solution, but it still does not work on linux fedora.
When will we have this solution?

At the moment, Smart Sync is only available on Windows and Mac. Dropbox has made no announcement on its availability on Linux. They usually don't discuss timelines or upcoming features until they're reaady to announce them, so we likely won't know that it's coming until it's already here, assuming that it's coming at all.
- Hey Jane, I would like to know the status of this feature request because we are under a time-bound pricing plan of Dropbox and not getting this feature, in a way, is ultimately making me feel that I am not able to utilize all the features for what I am paying for. Please escalate the issue and let us know how many upvotes are required to end this wait!
dropbox client on linux is a show. with increased competition from apple, microsoft, and google.. i don't see why dropbox doesnt play to its (previously) cross-platform strength. Frustratingly, they're are gonna go down the path that box did and play the enterprise collaboration gig with shared docs, tools, etc. and end up in the same situation. sigh. And this is the company guido works for? yech. not gonna keep sending them my money if these shenanigans keep going.
- Registered just to give this an upvote. Got a paid plan for three reasons: - more space than the free one - more than 3 machines (I got already several before this restriction came, so could not get any additional box without disconnecting several others) - smart sync. The last point and my laziness (I already used Dropbox free) were the reasons for choosing Dropbox over Google. Now found that smart sync does not work on half of the machines. Once my subscription expires (unfortunately I got an annual plan) I'll see if I stay here or move to google - no decent linux support I'll have there as well, but at least they don't advertise cross-platform and have more diverse options for space.
I use both MacOS and Ubuntu 18.04, and Smart Sync is a much better option than Selective Sync. However, it is not available in Ubuntu. Please invest some extra energy to support it on Linux OS. Thanks
Hey Jane certainly is helpfull to upvote this topic but what really matters me is that i already have voted with my money and chose Dropbox for the cross- platform compatibility. My subscription ends next year and i will vote again and i really hope dropbox product help me make my decision easy...

The absence of this feature for a platform is not justifiable. We choose a paid plan of Dropbox because Dropbox serves all Operating system equally with a seamless synchronization but not getting a flagship feature on an OS like Linux whose userbase is a large student community is a failure of Dropbox core management which are taking these silly decisions.
This feature request should be escalated at the earliest to keep the culture of Dropbox intact!!

I just read the email about the "upgrade" (paid) we are getting.
While it's nice to get 2TB instead of one I can't understand why Smart Sync is not available on Ubuntu Linux, since I'm paying the exact same amount of customers with Mac or Windows.

I'd also like to chime in here. Having the Smart Sync functionality available for Linux would be awesome. It would save me a lot of time and hassles, as well as save me some drive space by being able to better control what gets synced. I have multiple devices and systems, so this would be a blessing. Please, for the love of all that's holy, make this feature available for Linux.

I just discovered Smart Sync for Dropbox, but I was dismayed to learn that Linux is not yet supported. Most of my computers are running Linux (Linux Mint 18.3 Xfce 64-bit), and a few of them are running Windows 10 ver 1709. I might be interested in implementing Smart Sync, but only if it is available for Linux.
Having used Dropbox personally, and lately through a business plan where I enjoyed the fact that it had Smart Sync which I love using on the Windows desktop. Due to a change in tooling at work, I signed up for a personal account - and very much purposefully chose a plan that had Smart Sync included, since the feature is vital to my workflow. So, when I went to install it on some of my Linux computers, I was a bit flabbergasted to find it is still not available in the Linux client.
I just want to put forward, thatwe are paying customers here, and some of us absolutely use Linux on the desktop (and server) every day, and rely on this functionality. I certainly hope the Dropbox team take us seriously and make this feature a priority.
