When trying to use a link to share files I have to uninstall dropbox and then re-install it again.

For quite a while now the right click menu option to copy a link to share a file has been missing. The only way to restore it is to uninstall and then reinstall the app. Very frustrating. The option doesn't appear on the web version either. Also, the desktop app doesn't seem to connect to dropbox as files saved there don't appear on the web version

  • Hi Rich. Thanks for your help yesterday. Two things have occurred today. As I thought, dropbox didn't open on booting so I checked task manager and it was switched off on the 'startup' tab so I've enabled that. Also, I took your advice and booted the app from the Start menu and now all is fine. Hopefully, with the two 'fixes' I shouldn't have any more problems. Thanks again for your help.

Have you made sure the Dropbox application is running and visible in your system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac) before uninstalling? The right-click options will only be available if Dropbox is running and you're signed in to your account.

If it's not running, try launching it before you uninstall. If it's running, hover your cursor over the Dropbox icon to check its status.

I've hovered over the icon but nothing happens. Every time I re-install I have to sign in to use it so I should be running. It works once but the next time I go to use it the copy a link option isn't there. I've used it for seven or eight years without a problem but this all started about 6 months ago. It's just uninstalled so I'll try your advice and see what I get. Thanks

Hi Rich. I've re-installed dropbox and all folders have the little green ticks against them and the 'copy dropbox link' is there again, exactly as it was the last times I've had to do this. There's nothing to do with dropbox in the system tray but it appears in File Explorer. I have Windows 10 and all updates are allowed automatically. This problem started happening about 6 months ago, fortunately I don't transfer files very often. If it continues I shall have to find another way to effect transfers.

If Dropbox is running, it will be in the system tray. It looks like this (mine currently indicates that it's syncing). You may need to click the up arrow ^ to see hidden icons. This is the icon you need to hover over.
