The shared files exist in your account as well, so they take up space. You're not accessing them directly in the other person's account.
If you only need view and/or download access to the files, ask the owner to send you a shared link instead.

Dear Dropbox Team,
I would like to express my concern regarding the current policy where shared files take up storage space on both the owner's account and the accounts of those with whom the files are shared. This duplication of storage usage is inappropriate, as it unfairly penalizes users who have those files shared with them.
It is vital to address this issue by implementing a system where only the file owner's account is affected by the storage limit, allowing shared files to be accessed without occupying additional space in the accounts of collaborators. This change would enhance user experience and align with the expectations of modern file-sharing platforms.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
