Your feedback regarding our Dropbox desktop application has been very valuable and I will endeavor to make sure your voice is heard.
Keep in mind, that this isn't a Dropbox specific problem, but a restriction each OS sets, about limited characters. You can use all the characters when it comes to the website, however if the OS has such restrictions, the content wouldn't sync to the device.
From your message, it's also important to note that there shouldn't be a problem when you're using the dash symbol. What OS do you use on your end?

I have the same problem as the OP. I use MacOS which uses normal Unix filenames. I don’t need to share with Windows often, and can rename files when I want to. The new MacOS client is enforcing that I use Windows filename conventions. One of the many reasons I don’t want use Windows is limitations like this.
I would also like to say that this is a dropbox problem if you are enforcing a lowest-common-denominator filing convention on those who do not want to live in the 90’s.
The old Macos sync did not do this. Unfortunately, I now have M2 hardware, and so one of machines works normally, and the other can’t fully sync (in various random places).
