99 TopicsMoving Dropbox folder from ~/Library/CloudStorage
What is the reason for not allowing me to specify where I want to save my Dropbox files in Ventura? I don't have enough space in my system drive to keep a copy of my Dropbox files. And yes, I need a local copy at all times. I tried replacing the folder with a symlink pointing to an external drive but that does not work. Dropbox just refuses to load and these are the last lines of the log file: Traceback (most recent call last): File "dropbox/client/main.pyc", line 5055, in _setup_root_for_account File "dropbox/sync_root/helpers.pyc", line 164, in create_root_for_account File "dropbox/foundation/futures/basic.pyc", line 853, in result File "dropbox/sync_root/handlers/macos/file_provider.pyc", line 121, in set_result_or_convert_exception dropbox.mac.internal.MacError: [Errno 62] Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=62 "Too many levels of symbolic links" It looks like 1 level of symbolic links is one level too many. A search for Venture did not yield any results I found relevant. I need to know how to relocate the Dropbox folder. If I cannot relocate the folder, Dropbox loses its utility and that only means I will have to look for alternatives. I really hope I don't need to do that.Solved19KViews2likes26CommentsDropbox Migration to a New Mac With the New Cloud Storage Setup
On my primary computer, I keep all Dropbox files in offline mode. I've updated to the new Dropbox setup that places the Dropbox folder in ~/Library/CloudStorage. I'm wondering what will happen when I move to a new Mac in the future. In the past, the macOS transfer program would transfer all my files to the new computer's drive, and then Dropbox would reindex them (rather than having to redownload all the files from Dropbox). What will happen now with the new Dropbox setup? Thanks.Solved6.4KViews1like26CommentsDropbox very slow with Windows explorer
After wasting time, as usual, with Dropbox's assistance, I try to ask here. My problem is relatively simple to explain and consists in the fact that if I use Windows Explorer, navigating in the Dropbox folder is torture since any operation it's very slow (creating a folder, copying a file, etc...) while if I use, for example (but it couldn't be the solution) a file explorer like Explorer++ everything works perfectly. Another thing I verified is that if I navigate to the Dropbox folder from a Windows window that opens for example when I want to open/save a file, everything works without problems. The problem remains confined to windows explorer. Can anybody help me? Thank you6KViews7likes12CommentsHow Do I Use Dropbox on Windows 11 with a local User account?
When I set up my Windows 11 computer, it created an Administrator Account (called "Owner"). I put the Dropbox folder directly under the C drive instead of under C:/Users/Owner so that it would be accessible to all users on the computer. I just created a local standard account (called "MyUser") that I sign into separately. When I opened the Dropbox app on my standard account, it asked me to sign in. It created another Dropbox folder under C:\Users\MyUser, which will put two redundant folders on my computer. When I try to move the Dropbox folder location under Preferences/Sync, Windows asks me to sign into the folder but then Dropbox says that it cannot create a folder at that location. So - two questions: (1) how do I use my existing Dropbox installation on this computer without creating a redundant folder, and (2) how do I undo what Dropbox just set up on my account? Do I need quit Dropbox and delete the entire Windows user account? I suspect the answer is to NOT open the Dropbox app on my standard account, but instead to open the folder that was already created on the administrator account, and to edit and save in that folder. If that's the case, I just need to know how to undo or uninstall the app/folder that was created on my standard account (I suspect I just have to delete my Windows user account and start over, but it would be nice to have an easier solution).Solved5.9KViews0likes13CommentsDropbox generating excessive cache files
I have an issue with Dropbox 166.4.2920 on macOS 12.0.1 Dropbox keeps generating utterly excessive cache files, 114GB currently on a folder that has 3.3GB of actual contents. How can I force Dropbox to clear its cache in a reasonable timeframe and not keep accumulating this?5.5KViews0likes9CommentsHow do you get Dropbox back into Locations in the sidebar in Finder on a Mac?
Something happened all my sinking icons disappeared... It happened after I decided to change my location for Dropbox to my username folder on a Mac. So I need your help please as I think it's because I moved Dropbox using the dropbox icon in the clock tray. I went to preferences>sync tab. I chose location as my username folder. I've been told the default location for dropbox is under locations. Is that correct? Next I need to have the steps to go into the icon of dropbox on the cloud tray> preferences> sync tab and then choose locations and have you walk me through how to get it back to the Default location which I believe is locations in Finder on the side bar in a Mac. Also I've been told by Dropbox English chat support that it's "not a problem" that the dropbox icon is grayed out but I lost all syncing icons on my computer. I was also told that it could be that my Internet speed is not good so that that would because the icons does disappear. However my computer back in Los Angeles where it has very high speed and it's different computer is also no longer showing syncing icons. It's linked to the same dropbox plus account but there's no reason that a separate computer should be losing its syncing icons and it should be able to sync on its own up to the cloud to dropbox account. I really need somebody to help me who really knows TECHNICAL SUPPORT because this is not working...Solved5.1KViews0likes11CommentsMultiple Dropbox Folders Removal
I have two Dropbox folders after a messed up move process with one synced, and one not, but I cannot remove the unsynced one without possibly deleting the cloud storage as well. For the move process, I accessed the preferences menu through the desktop taskbar icon on Windows to get to the sync page. From there I clicked “move” under the Dropbox folder location, and when the location box showed up, I chose the Local Disk (D:) drive so it would move the Dropbox location directly into the (D:) drive without being under any other folders. After confirming the location, a long loading bar popped up and finished moving over the contents. Later, I realized that the Dropbox folder was moved to the (D:) drive, but the old location in C:\Users\<username> was also still there with it still being synced to the cloud. The new (D:) location did not have the cloud sync icons, and all of its contents had the X icon indicating they are not synced. When looking at the properties of the (D:) location, it showed there was 11GB stored on the disk and 2.5TB stored on the cloud. The (C:) location had significantly less stored on the disk, as it was synced to the cloud. I manually moved the (D:) location into a sub-folder on the (D:) drive so I could redo the process of moving the (C:) location like I was originally trying to do, as it wouldn’t work with the (D:) location already being present. When I looked back at the sync page in preferences, it showed the install location was still in the C:\Users\<username>\ spot with the original folder, not the (D:) location even after I already moved through this exact window. With the first (D:) location in the sub-folder, I was able to successfully move the (C:) location as intended, and the (C:) location was removed after being moved to the (D:) drive. This new location synced with the cloud and is working properly now with the (C:) location removed, but the older (D:)location that is not synced is still present in the sub-folder. When I try to delete the old folder, it shows it is deleting hundreds of GB of files, like it is deleting from the cloud as well as locally, so I canceled before it could finish. Despite not being synced like the main location and still having the X’s on all of the files, it deletes from the cloud when it is deleted locally. I do not know how this secondary location got messed up in the move process despite showing no errors or how to remove it without damaging my cloud storage as well. If anyone has an idea for how to remove this, it would be appreciated, thanks.Solved4.6KViews0likes13CommentsDropbox stopped executing, restarted it and I can't specify my Dropbox folder
For some unknown reason, Dropbox stopped running on my laptop. I restarted it and it behaved like it had just been freshly installed - it had me sign in, but when I checked the location of the dropbox file it was set to c:\Users\Ross (I had it set to the root of C:). I went to settings and tried to change the location to c:\ it reported "There is already a Dropbox folder at that location" (because that's where I had it before the crash), so I was prevented from changing it. So I uninstalled and reinstalled Dropbox. No change to behaviour. So I'm now in this situation: A fresh install of dropbox connected to my 2Tb of storage on the cloud. Dropbox trying to sync that 2Tb to an (empty) folder at c:\Users\Ross\Dropbox The original folder at c:\Dropbox with all my files in it, no longer getting sync'ed because Dropbox won't let me tell it that's where my files are. I really need to climb out of this hole in a way that doesn't involve downloading the entire fileset again, and preferably allows me to put the dropbox folder back to the root of c: again. One method I thought of might be: Pause syncing rename my original existing Dropbox folder out of the way, so C:\Dropbox becomes c:\Dropbox-Original Go into dropbox settings and move the Dropbox folder from c:\Users\Ross\Dropbox to c:\Dropbox (which it presumably will now permit me to do) move the contents ofc:\Dropbox-Original to C:\Dropbox Enable sync Any comments or advice appreciated.Solved4.3KViews0likes12CommentsMultiple Hard Drive Synchronisations
Hello, I'm going to have to different Mac on two different places and need to synchronise all my datas so when I switch from one computer to another, I can access all my data. The fact is that I have multiple hard drives cause I need lot of space. For each mac, I get 4 disk storage (one SSD inside the mac, and one or two SSD and one SATA). Dropbox Advanced subscription allow me to back up unlimited data, which is perfect for me (I have 20To of Data). Is there a way to asked dropbox to synchronise all my disk storages ? As a intensive user of dropbox, I know that I can only select one location for my main dropbox folder. The easiest way to proceed will be to have only one folder to synchronise, but the fact is there is no SSD on the market with 12To space ... Does anyone know the solution ? Can I define one place for my dropbox folder and then dispatch the folders on other disk storages or does this solution will not synchronise my datas ? I have MacOS Ventura 13.3.1 and the new Dropbox for MacOS has shifted my Dropbox folder to ~/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox. However, it left in place my previous Dropbox folder at ~/Dropbox. In Finder, these are apparently synced, in that I deleted a file from one and it disappeared from the other. However, the cloud-only symbol appears for one subfolder under the new~/Library/CloudStorage folder, but the one under ~/ shows up without the cloud-only symbol. Are these in fact two stored copies of the Dropbox files, and can I somehow avoid this ambiguity and maybe have the files appear only in one place? I'm not about to delete the old location if that might also delete the files from the Dropbox account and the new location. But I don't want to clutter my disc with two copies of everything in Dropbox.Solved3.7KViews0likes12Comments
