File access
442 TopicsMake offline files visible in the android filesystem
I think you should make files stored offline on Android available in the file system. As it is now, the dropbox files marked as 'available offline' are hidden from the rest of the operating system. This gives a number of problems: 1: When opening a file in an app, that app may put the file path in its 'most recently used documents'-list. However, since the path it gets from the Dropbox-app is not long-lived, the 'most recently used documents'-list becomes unusable, since the links on it become dead rather quickly. 2: It makes using browsing apps, like photo viewers or podcast players, on your offline files impossible. 3: Some apps expect content to be found on the file system. For example, the samsung app used to download content onto a samsung smart watch, expects to find files in the file system. It cannot be used to download files from dropbox onto the smart watch. 4: Sometimes a smart phone is used a bit like a computer. Like uploading files to an FTP-server and the like. A FTP-client typically expects to find files on the file system, and allows them to be selected and uploaded. This does not work with Dropbox. A possible work-around is to export the contents from the dropbox offline folder onto the phones regular file system. This is unsatisfactory because: 1) It feels cumbersome. The number of clicks to send a podcast episode to a smart watch, or to download a .pdf from dropbox and upload to an FTP-server, becomes a few too many. 2) For files which can be edited (like password manager saves, various profiles, text documents etc), the user needs to remember to copy the file back to Dropbox, which is very error prone. Dropbox obviously already has technology to synk a file system folder with dropbox. Could not this functionality be offered on smart phones also?19KViews86likes82CommentsMake TAGS editable or deletable from master list, please
Through weeks of tagging thousands of my portrait photos, I've changed my tags to better flow and group by category, but the old tag names are still popping up as options. I would like those gone as options. It would be great to see a master list of tags, and from therebe able to manage (edit, delete) tags from a master list, not just from individual files. Thanks for considering!12KViews48likes24CommentsSearch by file name instead of full-text search
Dropbox 'full-text search' is a powerful and convenient feature. However, as I add more and more files to Dropbox, the 'full-text search' feature is becoming more of a hindrance, especially when I don't want to do a 'deep' search. For instance, I need to find a file with the name 'Apple' on its name. However, the 'full-text search' returns a huge list of files containing the word 'Apple', and the file I need is buried amongst them. I request the Dropbox team to make the 'full-text search' an optional feature. That is, for a casual search, Dropbox should search only the file names. If I want a 'deeper' search, I should be able to select/tick 'full-text search' in the next step. Thanks!26KViews39likes29CommentsAbility to compare different versions of a file from the version history
There are many times that I have wished that I could see the differences between two versions of a file in the version history. I know that there are other ways to do this but they either don't work all the time or involve me giving someone/thing else access to my dropbox files. I really think this would be an excellent and often used piece of functionality.7.6KViews33likes6CommentsEnable searching EXIF metadata on website and mobile apps
Hi Dropbox and Carousel team, I have been a faithful and long time user of both Dropbox and Carousel, but have recently switched to Microsoft OneDrive as my Cloud Drive provider. What I have experienced is that in some ways the Office Online integration is better than with DropBox, but apart from that, the hole experience is not as I have come to expect as when I was using Dropbox. But since I have got 1 TB for free, work, I would need new features from you guys at Dropbox, to make me return :) ... and now back to my enhancement / feature request for Dropbox and Carousel, for both Apps and Website. Please enable EXIF photo data search in the Carousel App, and hereafter on website as well :) !! I guess it would be a matter of extending the already implemented full text search in dropbox for include EXIF information. This would enable users of Dropbox, and specifically users of Carousel to be able to search on photos taken on a specific location, GPS tag, or date/year, or folder/album name. Fellow Dropbox users, please vote on this enhancement request ! :)16KViews33likes36CommentsFull Text Search for Markdown and other Text Documents
I am trying to use the full text search feature, however it seems very limited. According to the documentation and my experiments, Dropbox only indexes the contents of text files with a .txt extension. However, Dropbox can Preview a wide range of files that contain only text, including .md files. Is there a way to get Dropbox to index file extensions other than .txt as Text content? If not, can this feature be added?7.6KViews23likes22CommentsSpotlight Search Doesn't Link to Files in Dropbox in macOS 13 Ventura
After upgrading to macOS Ventura, I was prompted to upgrade to "Dropbox for macOS 12". I proceeded with that, it moved my Dropbox folder to ~/Library/CloudStorage and confirmed all was successful. Now when using Spotlight to search (I often type something like 'drawings folder' to open a folder called Drawings) the results in Spotlight show the Dropbox app icon beside the name of the item I want (rather than a Finder icon for folder or file). Hitting Enter or clicking on the result switches to Finder and does nothing, or sometimes will open the Applications folder and show the Dropbox app. It's not linking me to the actual file in ~/Library/CloudStorage. I have done the following and the problem is not solved: Restarted Ensured all files are available for offline access Rebuilt the spotlight index Unlinked Dropbox from this Mac, did a complete clean install of dropbox, performed the upgrade to v159.4.5870 and synced just one folder to begin Nothing works. Any suggestions??Solved52KViews19likes398CommentsNeed iOS text editor that can search in text files
Since the Dropbox app doesn't have search once I open a simple text file, I need to find a text editor that can connect to my Dropbox account, and has a simple search feature. I don't even care if it can edit. The file I have is 6,000 lines and 33KB so it's not small but not huge either. Recommendations on a simple iOS app that can do searching insidethe text file?12KViews19likes17Comments
