Hi Dropbox community - I'm a design researcher here at Dropbox. I'm curious about how you access Dropbox! How do you access Dropbox: the website, the desktop app (for mac/windows), and/or the mobile app (iOS, android)? For those you use, why do you use them? For those you don't, why not? Is there anything you wish you could do on one that you can't today? Why?9.5KViews6likes11CommentsRecovering deleted files (older than 30 days)
I have a Dropbox Basic plan - and to date, I've only been on that plan. I deleted files more than 30 days ago (but less than 180 days ago), which means they aren't available for me to recover. With the Dropbox Professional plan (and similar plans), I'm able to recover files that were deleted up to 180 days ago. Does that mean that if I now upgraded to one of those plans, I would be able to recover those files I deleted between 30 and 180 days ago? Or would I have had to already been on one of those plans before I deleted the files, in order to be able to now recover them?Solved8.9KViews1like18CommentsUnable to Allow Dropbox in Preferences
OS: Mac OSX High Sierra (10.13.4) I just now upgraded from Dropbox Plus to Dropbox Professional. Then I clicked "Enable Smart Sync." Then I clicked "Open Preferences." Then in Preferences pane, I clicked "Allow" (to the right of "System software from developer 'Dropbox, Inc.' was blocked from loading.") Then nothing happens. So Smart Sync will not activate. How do I fix this? Thanks in advance!Solved8.3KViews0likes4CommentsSearching image exif data in app on Dropbox Professional plan
I save all my photos to Dropbox. They have lots of exif information; location, tags, keywords, captions etc, written from various programs, nowdays it's Digikam. I try and give the photos meaningful filenames as this is rapidly searchable across platforms, but most of the good information is stored internally in the files themselves. I was interested to see that the Plus plan introduced searchable files, but not jpegs. But from my understanding the Professional plan does allow text searches inside image files. This is so useful to me I've upgraded from Plus to Professional. However I'm not sure I've understood correctly. The Help page says: "You can search images in your Dropbox account based on the content in them. For example, you can search for “clothing” to see all images of clothing (and images related to clothing) in your Dropbox account—even if “clothing” isn’t in the file name." I would understand this to mean I could search any of the exif data from within the IOS app but my initial experiments in the app and on the website have not been successful. For example, the image: https://www.dropbox.com/s/npdks5bmaq7k4pv/Sun%2017%20Nov%202019%2016-42-10%20GMT.jpg?dl=0 contains the Caption 'Lumiere 2019 - Cathedral" in the Caption Abstract and Comment fields (output from exiftool): Caption-Abstract : Lumiere 2019 - Cathedral Comment : Lumiere 2019 - Cathedral but I've had no success searching on these text strings. Does the internal image search not work in the way I'm assuming? I've been charged pro-rata for the Professional plan until end December but I'm thinking of downgrading back to Plus so I don't get the full-year charge for 2020 as I'm not convinced Professional actually does what I'd hoped. I have a private link to a folder. Is it possible to see who accessed it and when, in the arears if I set up a Dropbox Professional, Business Advanced, or Enterprise plan? I want to make sure it was kept confidential with intended parties.4.3KViews0likes9CommentsProblems sharing folders
Hi, sorry, is already solved, I got an Email saying there was a problem with one of the files and I needed to restore the sharing options through a link, now is everything working fine again. I'm trying to share a couple of folders with a family member and I can't find a way to do it because everything I try gives me some sort of error. When I try to create a link it doesn't and the app tells me that I have no rights to create a sharing link to that folder - I'm the owner of it, actually the only one and haven't shared it with anyone else. When I try to change the folder to shared and add a person I get the error that I have reached my invitation limit for today and I should try in 24 hours, but I have sent one single invitation in the last 24 hours and that was to the root folder, which unfortunately was too big (I'm using Dropbox Professional and the other person the free version so he cannot synchronize the root folder completely because it's too big). I've read about clearing the browser cache in other similar threads but I've done it, I've tried from two different PC's and using the browser as well as through windows explorer, nothing helps, I get those errors from the very start and I can't find a way to share the smaller folders now. Any other ideas for a solution? Cheers and thanks in advanceSolved2.7KViews0likes8Commentshow to move a backup to regular dropbox?
so... by mistake i uploaded about 600gb of footage as a backup of my camera's card instead of as a normal dropbox folder. it took 2 days to complete. but now it's finished and i've realised it's not shareable... how do i move the backup to my normal dropbox folders so i can share with my client from there? seems stupid to re-upload (and to have to wait two more days!)Solved2KViews2likes3CommentsWhich device is deleting files
Hi! When I look at deleted files I see that they are deleted from PC (9), is there a way to learn more, like the name and ip of this computer. Under security I have a list of computers, but with their full name, not the PC(1) or Mac(3) nickname. Under same account. ThanksSolved2KViews0likes8CommentsDropbox Back-up - (not Beta) on Mac
Having experimented with Dropbox back-up, I have disabled the sync. Q1: it has re-organised my arrangement of folders and files so nowI have to waste time correcting the interference. Is there any way to avoid that happening? Q2:According to Dropbox, any file I dlete on Dropbox will be deleted on my Mac. That's back to front: it really should be any files or content I delete or change on my Mac shouls be deleted / changed in Dropboax. Is there any way to reverse? Q3 I use previously saved word processor files as templates for the next letter. Opening a letter after trialling back-up, I am told I cannot use it but must make a duplicate. That in itself is a nuisance, but think on: if i have to duplicate every file then it wont't take long before I have used up all the storage space on my computer and on Dropbox. Is there a way around tthat? Q4: Athough i stopped the back-up, it has continued so how do i delete the files it has back-up without them being deleted on my computer; do I need to download fthem from D-Back up?Solved2KViews1like9CommentsFinder colour codes now seem to disappear when a file is online only
So it would seem that when I now make a file online only, the finder colour code associated with it disappears. Is this deliberate, because for me it's an absolute disaster? I use purple, for example to signify that a file is uploaded to my client's server. Very often I work on jobs that create many files that are shared & amended during the course of the job. Only the final files have to go "out the door" at my client's end & so they are the ones the are most likely uploaded. I still have to go in later & make sure all the versions & iterations are backed up on their servers. The thing is, very often, I'm on another job by then & so I have to make projects online only, so I have no way of seeing how far I got in backing up these files (which are, more often than not, 10-15GB files, so they're not things that upload quickly) without bringing everything back down to the Dropbox folder to see the colour codes. Is it really necessary to hide them like this?Solved1.9KViews0likes6Comments
