Law office merged our accounts
An attorney we are working with invited us to share files, except they accidentally invited us to join their team. Now we are stuck merged and they can only "suspend" or "delete" our account (they deleted and we lost everything, able to restore thankfully). We are unable to leave the group either. How can we get our personal dropbox account severed from theirs in-tact?

You need to contact the team admin and ask them to convert your account back to an individual account. It's very important that they don't just remove you from the team as doing so would delete your account, as you've found out. When that happens they only have seven days to restore your account. They must convert it back to an individual account.
Is there step by step for us to do this? I need to get my info back in my control. But want to make it as easy as possible for them.
