Some Powerpoint Files not Saving using Office Online

Hi,

I have a Dropbox 2TB account user who is sharing their files with some users so they can edit the files and save them in the web using the Office 365 integration. The users have noticed that some files (.pptx) that they are editing (approx 250MB powerpoint files - well within the 2GB limit) are not saving the changes they make, even when clicking on the save and return to folder button. I have had the same folders shared to me and i experience the same. We can create new powerpoint files in there and edit them online without issue. We all have A5 MS accounts and i have removed the Office integration from my account and re-added it - no difference. This is not a caching issue either as it's happening on multiple computers.

If i install the dropbox client and sync the files locally i can edit the files fine and they will update on dropbox.com. But i still can't edit these updated files on dropbox.com using powerpoint for web even after doing that.

If i put the file on my OneDrive account and open the files from OneDrive online they will open in Powerpoint Online and any changes i make are instantly saved.

Thanks

Richard

  • I'm not sure. As i say, if i create a new file it's fine. The other files that had the issue got replaced so i can't check on that anymore. Anyway, i've decided to just get the users to use the client and open directly (and update) in powerpoint client as this works fine for the particular problem file that i've been mainly talking about. Thanks.

Hi there BigBlueBall - sorry to hear you're having issues with this.

Can you let us know some additional information about your set up and how you're editing and sharing those files exactly?

Are you all using individual accounts by the way?

Also, does the issue improve at all after clearing your browser's cache or when using another browser, preferably with no extensions or plugins running?

Let us know more and we'll take it from there, Richard.

      Hi

Yes, we are all using separate accounts. The owner of the files has a 2TB account as does one of the people they are sharing too. I have also been testing with a 2GB basic acount. The files are in folders shared from the primary user to each of us with edit rights provided. We are logging in to dropbox.com with our accounts and clicking on the respective files which open in the browser. Then click on 'Open In' and select Microsoft Powerpoint for the Web. When opening in Powerpoint it then takes about 45 secs to a minute for it to load and then it displays. Make an edit click on save and return to folder and it does this in a second. I have also changed the option in the dropbox settings for the office apps to open the office files directly in the office apps rather than opening in dropbox online first and that similarly takes a while to open the files, but makes no difference to the saving.

I've tried different browsers and 3 different people's computers. Just tried in Opera, which i never use, and will have no extensions in it. Same thing.

      Thanks

Since you mention it takes some time for the PowerPoint to load on your browsers, can you clarify if this is happening for all PowerPoint files or specific ones that may include more slides?

If you don’t click on the “Save and return” option and let the the PowerPoint autosave the updates, does it say “Saved to Dropbox” on top or is it stuck at “Saving” instead?

Finally, I’d also like you to try this via an incognito window on your browser, and let me know if you see any difference.
