Sorry I don't know what happened, but when I tried the same thing today, it did not ask me what app to open the file with and directly opened it with Excel.
It asked me if I would like to link Dropbox to either Microsoft or Google (I didn't read carefully), then the file opened without much problem.

Hi anurtd354,
Thanks for visiting the Dropbox community. Sorry to hear you are having this issue. I can see that MrBeanley was also experiencing something similar and seems to have found a workaround for it. Have you tried the method he outlined above? Please let us know if this works for you too.
Thanks again and have a great day!

Thanks for the update anurtd354!
I'm delighted to hear everything is working for you again. It's hard to say what the issue may have been but good to see troubleshooting working, and the main thing is you are back up and running. Have you had any issues with any other apps on Android 12, or just these ones?
Thanks again, and have a great day!

Hey LunQe, sorry to hear about this.
Can you please let us know some additional information like the exact OS of your device, the version of the apps in use etc?
A screenshot of the exact error you're getting would also help, so feel free to attach one in your next reply.
