Sort by name, folders first
Lately my sorting has been screwed up on web version of Dropbox. My files & folders are sorted alphabetically. What I really want is sorting by name, grouping by kind so that folders are displayed fi...

Thanks for this! But it only appears to be a temporary fix...for as long as you have the developer tools window open...
Yes that's true. An alternative is to install a user agent switching plugin. I can't vouch for any, but something like this: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/user-agent-switcher-for-c/djflhoibgkdhkhhcedjiklpkjnoahfmg

Alphabetical sorting of files and folders on a Mac is a personal preference. OS X provides an option to the user to keep the folders on top.
Regadless of the platform or application, the user should always have this option.

This is posted in the wrong forum - it's the Desktop app issues forum. Maybe that's why the right people at Dropbox aren't seeing it?
Anyway, I came across this when I noticed the same issue on my Mac. I was able to get around it by just changing my user-agent.
It'll be different in every browser, but in the latest version of Chrome for example:
- Click the 'three dots' menu icon at the top right
- Go to More Tools -> Developer Tools
- There should be a section at the bottom with another 'three dots' menu on the left, if not, press Esc to show it
- Press that three dot menu, then select 'Network conditions'
- Change the user agent option to something Windows based (I just used the latest version of Chrome on Windows)
- Keep the Developer Tools window open, and refresh the page... voila!
Hope this helps others until Dropbox adds an option for this behaviour.

I can't find the menu/option you're talking about. Could you provide a link to that page, assuming it still exists? - mrwilkins8 years agoNew member | Level 2

- UD B.8 years agoExplorer | Level 4Thank you very much for letting me know that a Mac user agent will get pure alphabetical sorting. That's exactly what I want. I use file name prefixes expecting that files and folders with the same prefix will sort together.
I agree there should be an option. Good file browsers allow the user to choose their sort options (alphabetical or type + alphabetical) to fit the situation. Dropbox seems to give the web interface very little attention, so I guess they expect use to mostly use PC to PC sync and the native file browser.- dvmierlo7 years agoHelpful | Level 6
