It takes time to upload them, but, Camera Uploads is by far the quickest way - just dont do it other ways as well because camera uploads wont realise that and you are doubling the workload.
You need to leave the app open and let it do it.
Alternatively connect to a computer and let it sync. BUT its going to take a long long time to upload them I'm afraid.

I preferred local copies and i was struggling to copy from iPhone to laptop (it breaks in between and have no idea how much of it is copied). This is the reason I thought to try for a cloud solution. I will try again for some more time and if it does not work, I will continue Dropbox. I am also exploring some other cloud solutions (I did not like iCloud as its not a copy and only a sync).

And you can see what has and hasn't uploaded via the Dropbox website. And if really necessary nuke the camera upload history and restart it all.
