File access
156 TopicsIs there any easy way to find duplicate files?
This is not really a space issue, I have lots, but I have nearly 1000 ebooks that I sometimes file in multiple places. (No, I don't use the dreaded Kindle thanks.) So I may download it in a "holiday reading" folder, then I may also download in the "Publishers folder" and at some point I may have reviewed it and moved it to the "author" folder and then maybe I have forgotten that I downloaded it in the "lost interest in this" folder. So there could be anywhere from 1-4 version of a book floating around. If I search specifically by name it shows me all of the versions and then I can delete the ones that are in the "wrong" place, but I don't have the time or inclination (despite my love of procrastination by rearranging files) to search 1000 titles. So is there a simple Dropbox search function for duplicates, or do I have to download some kind of app that will do the job. Can you download file titles and locations to a spreadsheet? At least that would let me filter/sort and then go back and find the ones I want to delete. If that's required, I don't want one that automatically deletes duplicates, I want to pick which ones are required, but if you have any recommendations of on that is easy to use and pretty much straight forward (nothing fancy required, just find the duplicates (or those that may have a similar name since sometimes they get saved with slightly different titles), I'd appreciate the help. Thanks.Solved53KViews6likes7CommentsSearching within deleted files
How do I search by file name in deleted files? When I use the search bar it searches not-deleted files, and as far as I can tell all I can do is sort deleted files by date range. I have no clue what the date of creation or deletion was, but I have the file name. Also, I only have one account using my dropbox, so who deleted it is useless. I would do ctrl+f, but dropbox's website only loads a few lines past the bottom of the visible page, so it's useless. And folders change, merge, and get removed over the years so searching by folder is also not helpful. I know I used to be able tosearch my entire deleted file history by file name a few years ago but haven't needed to recently. Is there a limit to how far back deleted files are saved? I've been paying for the option sine opening my dropbox account, so in theory I should have access to anything I've ever deleted.Solved22KViews4likes35CommentsImage search/facial recognition/keyword
Hello! I've copied all of the photos and videos from my iphone to dropbox- over 13,000 files. Is it possible (now, or in the future) to look for photos by searching by keyword? Currently I have them sorted into 2016, 2017, 2018 but would like to sort out photos of horses, etc. into a separate folder. It would be much less tedious if it were possible. Thanks very much!Solved18KViews7likes6Commentslatest email from dropbox contains x-webdoc links - that don't work
Got an email this morning from Dropbox - subject: "Introducing: Our newest set of tools to simply your life". The email contains links to various new features ... that are going to simply our lives apparently. e.g. x-webdoc://C33115A8-807A-463D-B0AA-ECE1119E84A1/experience.dropbox.com/resources/information-architecture-for-distributed-work?_tk=email&_camp=3216404&_ad=8566dbc5b57a4d3c95d278d1337f7282&utm_source=iter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=us-en&utm_campaign=p1_bb_co_all_pcn_b202111&utm_content=m2_c email link However, I can't find a browser that will open the x-webdoc: protocol. Anyone else able to do get this to work? I tried Mac/Safari, Mac/Chrome, Windows/Chrome - all without success. Whatever happened to just straightforward URL links to a specific page? BTW this is NOT making my life more simply, its complicating it by having to write this forum entry. Plus ... if you go to your Dropbox account, you CAN add tags to folders and files and search for them. This is good for any new folders/files uploaded. However, it doesn't help with 1,000s of existing folders/files. AND - for me, I'd have been MUCH happier have a search feature that I could restrict to just folder names or just file names, not 100s of files that CONTAIN part of whatever it is I'm searching for. So for me, at least, these new features (despite not being able to easily find out about them because of the x-webdoc based link) STILL does not provide a simple search feature for folders and/or files. Another reason I won't be renewing my subscription next September, unless things improve.Solved10KViews0likes3CommentsSearch doesn't find all results.
Searching for folders which are clearly there returns no results. I am searching for a specific word which is part of multiple folders but they do not all appear in the results. If I search multiple times it wil sometimes have 1 result and sometimes 2, but there should be more. I can't think of a reasonable explanation why repeating the same search will return different results unless there is a technical issue with Dropbox itself. Is this a known issue that will be resolved? EDIT: Just wanted to also mention I've tested this with multiple browsers and incognito mode. My client (who came to me with this issue) also has the same problems.Solved7.9KViews5likes18Comments'Search by tag' not working
I have applied tags to my photos, but the tags are not showing up in the search bar. When I perform the search, I get results that I assume Dropbox's image classifier has unhelpfully recognized as related to my tag search, but I am not able to filter results that actually have that tag. I have cleared my cache, used Firefox and Chrome browsers (most recent versions), I have used the browsers in incognito/private modes, used Windows and macOS operating systems (most recent versions), and tried searching via my desktop file explorers. Nothing works. I have not tried to move the photos into a new folder to tag them there, because the entire point of adding tags was to filter photos that I wanted to move in the first place.Solved7.8KViews3likes19CommentsI see an older version of my Excel files - how can I get the latest one?
I have 2 excel files that I had saved on my dropbox account. This week I received a new laptop from work and when I opened the files they are a version from several months ago. Is there a way to get those newer versions? What did I do wrong that the files were not updated in my dropbox account?Solved7.1KViews1like25CommentsHow to delete version hisotry?
Hi, everyone. I sent a message through support chat and was directed to Community Board. Glad to be part of Dropbox...learning and checking things out. Please read below and offer any support that you may have. Thanks! -Keith HEY THERE! 🙂 Thanks for being there. I need to delete files in the version history that have errors in the content that I don't want others to see--and some of the content has change, of course, as well, in other instances. How can I do this--or can you execute a DELETE ALL HISTORY from the back office if we can't access it? I'm thinking that in the future, if we don't want to have older versions in the history folder, we should just delete the file first before uploaded the new version (or would we have to rename it)...new to Dropbox, so a bit to learn is all. I'm looking at the possibility of extending/upgrading our account here, as our team may need more space here shortly. 🙂 Thank you for any assistance that you can offer.Solved6.3KViews3likes7Comments
