1232 TopicsCan't un-exclude directories with `dropbox.py exclude remove <directory>` on Ubuntu 20.04.2
I have a Linux machine (running Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS, "Focal Fossa") upon which I am running a "headless" Dropbox daemon as per here: https://www.dropbox.com/install-linux The Dropbox daemon is up to date: ``` $ dropbox.py version Dropbox daemon version: 125.4.3474 Dropbox command-line interface version: 2020.03.04 ``` This machine is truly "headless", so I am doing everything on the command line. Installation of the daemon and initial sync seemed to work fine, though autostart isn't working for me. I've found that I can exclude directories with `dropbox.py exclude add <directory>` just fine. When I run that command for a directory in my Dropbox, the directory briefly appears in the list output from `dropbox.py exclude`. However, once the directory is actually deleted from the local Dropbox directory, it disappears from the list too. For example, I do have a bunch of directories excluded, and they are not present in the local Dropbox directory. However, the tool incorrectly reports no excluded directories: ``` $ dropbox.py exclude No directories are being ignored. ``` This is fine, if a bit weird, but the problem is that I can't add excluded directories back (un-exclude them?) with `dropbox.py exclude remove <directory>`. That command outputs nothing and has no effect. Why not? How can I get this to work? It seems totally broken right now.7.6KViews10likes43CommentsRandomly deleted files and folders
Anyone else experiencing files and folders being deleted from Dropbox without human intervention? I know that I'm going to get the stock Dropbox answer here that it can't happen, but I can explicitly tell you it does. What I saw was random deletions of over 10,000 files/folders in the space of less than 33 seconds. Even with the best will in the world - not to mention the fastest fingers - this just isn't possible. Especially considering that some complete folders, and in some cases just files within folders, disappeared at 13:30 BST yesterday, all within 33 seconds (according to the event log). The kicker is that the only person who has access to these files/folders is me - and I know for sure that I didn't delete them. I guess there may be 2 explanations: 1) I entered a fugue state and decided to delete all my work on a number of cases 2) Something is happening with the Dropbox software that either Dropbox don't know about or can't fix Been trying to get Dropbox support to assist, but got the usual default customer service answer of "it's not us it's you". Well, I know it's not me - so by extension it must be the software! Next step is to request a refund of my yearly plan as I cannot have something that intervenes in my workflow like this and then wastes half a day (and counting) trying to figure out what's missing. I guess the only silver lining is that I have a Dropbox business account, so files are kept forever. Small benefit, but a good one at this stage. So, after my long winded moan above, anyone have a resolution to stop Dropbox from deleting things from my folders? Or is it just time to move on to another provider? Finally, don't let anyone from Dropbox tell you differently (especially the "Super Users") as I can categorically say it happens. They'll tell you it can't, but I know for a fact that it can. Best of luck and hoping you don't fall foul of the same problems I've had.Solved30KViews10likes60CommentsError message when deleting folders
I have used Dropbox for years and have never had this problem. I'm cleaning up my files and when I try to delete a folder I get this message: There are too many files in one request. Please retry with fewer files. What has changed? How do I go about deleting my folders?Solved14KViews8likes69CommentsWhy did the location of my Dropbox folder change?
Today I noticed that right clicking on files in my Dropbox folder (the ones pinned to my Finder sidebar) did not bring up the Dropbox menu options. After further investigation I realized that Dropbox had moved my entire directory into /Users/library and displays this message, buried within preferences: This version of macOS requires Dropbox folders to be stored here: /Users/alex/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox I received no notice that this was happening. I have no idea when it happened and I have no way to know what version the files in the new directory are. What a mess! Any advice on how to ensure my files are up to date and if it's safe to delete the old dropbox directory? I accidentally moved my folders today by mistakenly clicking on it. My question is, is there a way to prevent this from happening, like adding a prompt if a folder is going to be moved or deleted? It will prevent accidental moving or deletion of files/folders.Solved17KViews7likes18CommentsDropbox constantly creating desktop.ini files - how do disable this?
As per the title; the latest dropbox is now generating desktop.ini files pretty much as soon as they're deleted (they were recreated only on dropbox starts earlier, so a delete upon startup was all I needed). This is detrimental for me; how can I disable this behaviour? They are pretty meaningless files, too, this is all in it: ■[ . S h e l l C l a s s I n f o ] I c o n R e s o u r c e = C : \ P r o g r a m F i l e s ( x 8 6 ) \ D r o p b o x \ C l i e n t \ D r o p b o x . e x e , - 2 3 0 1 Edit: -for anyone stumbling onto this one- There is no solution, dropbox support is unable to reproduce the issue (using windows built-in file manager does not show the file!). There's also no promise of any solution, ever. This is what you get you bloody miserable user for paying for this product. Best Option: use another product.Solved10KViews7likes35CommentsBulk delete shared links
I just found that deleting all the shared links that accumulate over time isn't that easy. In fact, I have to click on each one's ellipsis and then click again on "Delete". Imagine the fun I had for all those files and folders. May I suggest Dropbox made more use of the concept called "Checkbox", which is widely used in other parts of it's UI.5.3KViews7likes5CommentsDropbox deleted all my files!
No, we didn’t. Now that the clickbait worked, let’s get into the meat of the article. I know there’s a lot of frustration about how ‘Dropbox deleted all my files’. I accept it’s hard to lose files, especially if they’re vital for your business, precious family or baby pictures, or even your favorite cryptocurrency digital wallet. We’ve received emails, calls, and forum threads stating the same as the title. Users are insistent that we did the deletions. However, as other Dropboxers have posted here have said, and while it makes me seem robotic to repeat the same answer, this is the truth: Dropbox does not delete your files, without any user interaction on them. The latter part of that sentence is paramount. If you, or someone else with access to those files, deletes them, then Dropbox does what it’s supposed to do, and syncs the deletion to all devices and users.Solved77KViews7likes22CommentsHow do YOU access Dropbox?
Hi Dropbox community - I'm a design researcher here at Dropbox. I'm curious about how you access Dropbox! How do you access Dropbox: the website, the desktop app (for mac/windows), and/or the mobile app (iOS, android)? For those you use, why do you use them? For those you don't, why not? Is there anything you wish you could do on one that you can't today? Why?9.5KViews6likes11Comments
