Add .dropboxignore directory to exclude folders without using selective sync
Please please please can you add a feature that allows folders to be excluded from the Dropbox account (on windows and mac). For sure I'm not the first person to request this, but I'm yet to find a good explanation of why it's not there. A quick google search reveals loads of people also looking for the same feature. I really like the workflow I have with dropbox, but it's getting to the point where I might switch providers in order to allow better selective sync.
I've seen hackish solutions using selective sync, but it would be great if this could be done in one of the following ways:
- global pattern matching eg "node_modules"
- a marker file in the directory like .dropboxignore
- a simple right click context menu "Ignore this folder"
Other than that, keep up the good work. Cheers.

In the past I used the DropboxFilter project to do exactly that. I updated it so that it works again with the current version of Dropbox.
You can find everything you need here:

@Jasper - Also .vagrant folders, composer vendor dir, ruby gems, etc.—almost any language has folders with giant dependency trees, and many tools (Docker, Vagrant, etc.) create one or more hidden dirs with either giant files or hundreds of small files.
Every time I set up a new project inside my Dropbox, I have to remember to quickly set up selective sync options—on all my computers—to exclude said folders, otherwise I'll notice that gigabytes of bandwidth or tons of CPU have been consumed later, then I'll have to rebuild the project after fixing up selective sync options.
I'm amazed this isn't higher on Dropbox's internal radar, for the simple fact of dogfooding—surely some of the Dropbox internal devs have run into this issue?

Just sent a link to this topic to their support, maybe they'll at least communicate.

I wrote to contact (as paid user) about this with this content:

Dear dropbox, what happened with you?, your clients need something, you have a channel for that and do you listen it?, I love dropbox, but we need this feature in this time. Do you love us?
This topic is very important for us, on the forum it is the most voted case (actually there 2 with the same issue), c'mon, help us, I don't want to get in love to other, you are not me, it's your turn.
Look the two topics on the forum:

Hi All,
At the moment, the Selctive Sync function works as a 'blacklist'. I'm wondering if there could be an option to have a 'whitelist' sync. I have remote computers where I only want to sync 1 or 2 folders.
C'est possiblé?
Thanks.
- SanchezDropbox StaffHey James B.27, welcome to our community! That’s a great idea! I can see how this would come in handy
I’ve moved your post here, so our team can have a look at it.Cheers - James B.27Helpful | Level 5
nice one Sanchez!

Yes, please make this possible! A per-client setting to choose whether the Selective Sync is opt-in (new folders synced by default) or opt-out (new folders not synced by default).

Please could you add 'Unsync folder' to the contextual menu when right clicking on a folder?

Yes please. Given that you there is no "ignore files/folders" option this would be the next best thing to use existing functionality and not have to go through the tedious menu to unsync folders like these.

Well, Dropbox did make a choice, and so have I. I'm in the progress of moving just enough of stuff off of Dropbox to cancel my paid subscription. Not, that anyone would care.
