Sci-fi things that are now reality

I don’t know about you, but every now and then it occurs to me that it's crazy to think about how much our world has changed in just a few years, especially when it comes to tech. I mean, think about it - we can now carry tiny computers in our pockets, travel to space, and communicate with people on the other side of the planet in a matter of seconds. It's all pretty mind-blowing.

But what's even crazier is that a lot of the things that used to be the stuff of science fiction are now a part of our everyday lives. Remember when flying cars and teleportation were the coolest things you could imagine? Well, we may not have those just yet, but there are still plenty of incredible technological advancements that would have seemed like pure fantasy just a few decades ago. So, let’s take a look at some of the most amazing things that used to be sci-fi but are now a reality.

From artificial intelligence to augmented reality, virtual assistants to robot cleaners, let’s take a sec to appreciate the ways technology have integrated into our lives. So sit back, relax, and let's explore the world of yesterday's dreams that are now today's reality - sorry - too cheesy!

Dash: A search engine that’s smarter than me

We’re big fans of Dropbox Dash, and all of the helpful AI possibilities that it brings. What possibilities, you ask?

Well, With Dash, one search bar is all it takes to find exactly what you’re looking for. Dash connects with the work tools you use every day: Google Workspace, Microsoft Outlook, Salesforce, Notion, and many more. You’ll have instant access to all the info you need to do your best work. It might not quite be JARVIS from Iron Man, but truly intelligent workflows make work a lot less work. Learn more about Dropbox Dash and how it can be used. Already using it? Connect with others in the community to learn tips and share ideas in our dedicated Dash beta group.

Dropbox Dash is AI-powered universal search that connects all of your tools, content, and apps in a single search bar. Working with the tools you actually already work with, like Google Workspace, Microsoft Outlook, Salesforce, and more, you can find everything in one place, fast. Overall, you can make search a one step process again.

And if universal search isn’t enough, Dash can do more than that too. And it will continue to grow but for now you can look forward to:
  • Start Page: A single dashboard that lets you access Dash universal search, view Stacks, get shortcuts to recent work, and start meetings, making it easier to navigate your day and get back to your most important work.
  • Stacks: Smart collections for your links that offer a quick way to save, organize, and retrieve URLs. In the same way files have folders and songs have playlists, Stacks provide an easily shareable, organizational layer for your cloud content.

A virtual secretary: Gmail and Dropbox

Integrating Gmail with Dropbox is like having a virtual secretary to manage all your file-sharing needs. Now, you can easily share and save Dropbox content to Gmail conversations. No more worrying about attachment size limits or keeping track of different versions of the same document.
Here are some of the perks of this handy integration of Dropbox and Gmail:
  • Dropbox links point to the latest version, keeping everyone on the same page.
  • Easily manage the visibility, access, and download permissions of every file, folder, and link you share.
  • You can connect Gmail to Dropbox and share files to a new message draft instantly. Simply select the file you want to share from Dropbox, open the Share menu, and select Gmail.

Simply knowing the date: not sci-fi but helpful!

For me, some life improving technology can be really simple, well I say that not knowing anything about code. But the one that I love the most is in Dropbox Paper, adding the date is as simple as typing /date.

How to add a date in Dropbox Paper

A few small but mighty tech improvements that may have seemed life sci-fi in the past (or now, if you try to explain it to me too technically). Tell us about the updates that improve your day to day - I am always on the hunt for tips 😁

I love this post Amy, until you actually think about it, you don't really notice how much we're catching up with all the old sci-fi movies in everyday life. It makes you wonder what will be next. I'm definitely hoping for hoverboards and flying DeLorean time machines!
